James Gunn is adding Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow to the DCU Chapter 1 Gods and Monsters. A recent update from Production Bulletin indicates that filming of the movie will begin in January 2025. House of the Dragon fame Milly Alcock is playing the eponymous character, accompanied by Aquaman actor Jason Momoa.
The story is borrowed from the eight-issue miniseries created by Tom King that ran between 2021 and 2022. The plot revolves around 21-year-old Kara Zor-El and explores her origins before her arrival on Earth. Other confirmed members of the cast include The Drop's Matthias Schoenaerts and 3 Body Problem's Eve Ridley.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow gets a Nordic landscape for filming
Other than London, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be shot in a currently undisclosed location in Iceland. Superman: Legacy used similar locations, as can be seen in the trailer. As a part of James Gunn's DC Universe, it will tie directly to the David Cornswet starrer film.
Supergirl's story is a bit different than her cousin's, as he was sent to Earth as an infant while she arrives on the planet after witnessing some disturbing events on Krypton, as James Gunn explains in an interview with The Wrap.
In a live-action adaptation, Melissa Benoist plays Kara Zor-El but the character is much lighter, while Milly's version is going to be darker. Melissa's Supergirl later becomes a part of Arrowverse, a shared universe including Green Arrow, The Flash, Black Lightning, and more.
Jason Momoa will be there in the film. However, to the fans' dismay, he is not returning as the iconic Aquaman. The actor will be playing Lobo, a supervillain who first appeared in Omega Man issue 3. The character's live-action debut happened in a TV series dubbed Krypton that focuses on Superman's grandfather Seg-El.
Milly's Supergirl will be joined by Eve Ridley's Ruthye Marye Knoll, who will be hunting Krem of the Yellow Hills, portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts. She is likely to be the co-lead in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The House of the Dragon actress previously beat Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly for the role; the latter has already voiced the character in a few DC animated movies.
Gods and Monsters will have twelve projects that include The Brave and the Bold, Peacemaker, and more. It is likely to lay down a foundation for the characters before they eventually come together to stand against a bigger threat, like Darkseid.
