James Gunn's DC is bringing in newer projects on screen, and one of the lesser-known comic characters making their on-screen debut is Clayface. The studio was in search of a director for the film, and it has just been confirmed that James Watkins has joined the team as the director. Watkins saw success this year after directing Speak No Evil, one of the biggest horror films of the year that opened to favorable reviews. Apart from that, he has written and directed Eden Lake and The Woman in Black.

Joining him is Mike Flanagan, who is writing the script. Flanagan is known for creating compelling horror narratives, having been the mastermind behind The Haunting of Hill House and Fall of the House of Usher. As Clayface has its roots in horror, fans can rest assured that the project is in good hands.

Sources have added that the film has a budget of $40 million and will start shooting this year. Slated to release in 2026, the film does not have a cast as of yet but is set to be produced by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris, along with Peter Safran and James Gunn.

James Gunn's DC has some exciting projects lined up for fans as the studio has been announcing the upcoming works they are working on, most of which have seen excitement among fans. Gunn's first project, of course, is David Corenswet starrer, which is set to hit theaters on 11th July, 2026. After that, we'll get to see Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow in 2026, followed by Batman II in 2027 and Dynamic Duo in 2028.

What is Clayface about?

The Batman villain, which debuted in 1940, shares a story similar to Coralie Fargeat's The Substance, as the story features an actor who uses a substance to remain a part of the industry, but later realizes that the substance left him with shape-shifting abilities and he can turn himself into a piece of clay that can move around.

The story revolves around Basil Karlo, a B-list actor who is enraged at being removed from the remake of a popular horror movie he starred in. To exact revenge, he goes on a killing spree as he dons the avatar of Clayface and becomes a serial killer. He is a popular villain in Batman's universe and is known for creating much havoc.

Alan Tudyk, who has previously voiced Clayface in Creature Commandos, could possibly play the role of the villain, but it has not yet been confirmed. More details on the project are awaited for now.
