Chappell Roan, the pop sensation, won her first-ever MTV Video Music Award at the 2024 VMAs, held on September 11. The Good Luck, Babe! singer was bestowed with the Best New Artist trophy during the star-studded event, held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. In her speech, she thanked and dedicated the award to the queer community.

The 26-year-old, clad in a chainlink dress and matching headpiece, accepted the award and read her speech aloud from her diary. "I dedicate this to all the drag artists who inspire me," she said. And, after nodding to her family and friends, she went on to dedicate it to those who "fuel pop," saying:

"I dedicate this to the queer and trans people that fuel pop, to the gays who dedicate my songs to someone they love or hate, and thank you to the people who are fans who listen to me, who hear me when I share my joy and my fears. Thank you for listening."

She also directly thanked her fans, as the audience cheered on loudly, sharing:

"And thank you to the people who are fans, who listen to me, who hear me when I share my joy and my fears. Thank you. For all the queer kids in the Midwest watching right now: I see you. I understand you because I'm one of you, and don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't be exactly who you want to be."

Chappell Roan goes viral for firing back at a photographer

Chappell Roan, born Kayleigh Amstutz, also went viral for another moment during the night, when she shot back at a photographer. The latter was screaming lewd comments at her from the press area, telling her to quiet down as she walked the red carpet. Roan, while doing a quick touch-up with her stylist, pulled away and used his own words against him.

Apart from Roan, Benson Boone, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozey, Teddy Swims, and Tyla were all in the running. Roan was nominated for several other categories, including Push Performance of the Year, Song of Summer, and Best Trending Video.

While she may have bagged the award for Best New Artist, she wanted it known that she and fellow singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter had been in the industry for over a decade, before rising to fame. She told ET in a red-carpet interview that night,

"Me and Sabrina, we've been doing this for a decade. It just takes this long to lift up."

The singer-songwriter is known for her 1980s synth-pop/early 2000s pop hits-inspired music and her aesthetic is notoriously inspired by drag queens. It was her 2020 single, Pink Pony Club, that propelled her to fame.
