Caught Stealing: Sony drops exciting release updates for Austin Butler's upcoming crime thriller

Based on Charlie Huston's book Caught Stealing, who is also writing the script of the film, Caught Stealing is directed by the Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nominee filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, who is well known for his works, including Requiem for a Dream (2000), The Fountain (2006), Black Swan (2010), Noah (2014), The Whale (2022).

The plot of Caught Stealing is set in the 1990s and revolves around a former baseball player who gets involved in the notorious crime world. As per IMDb, the synopsis reads:

Burned-out ex-baseball player Hank Thompson unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City, forced to navigate a treacherous underworld he never imagined.

Caught Stealing is slated to make its theatrical release on 29th August 2025 in the United States, as announced by Sony Pictures Releasing. As per reports from Deadline, Insidious 6 was scheduled to be released on 29th August, but the release date got further rescheduled to next year, and Caught Stealing has been brought on board to be released on this date instead.

Director Darren Aronofsky spoke to Variety at the time when the announcement of Caught Stealing was made in 2024, as he said:

“Excited to be teaming up with my old friends at Sony Pictures to bring Charlie’s adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride to life. I can’t wait to start working with Austin and my family of NYC filmmakers.”

The BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Austin Butler is well-known for his work in films and TV series, including The Carrie Diaries (2013-2014), Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood (2019), Elvis (2022), and Dune: Part Two (2024) and will be seen in Caught Stealing as the lead protagonist, Hank Thompson.

Along with directing, Darren Aronofsky shall also be producing Caught Stealing along with Ari Handel, who has previously collaborated with Darren Aronofsky not only as a producer but also in the writing of films including The Fountain, Black Swan, Noah, Mother! (2017), The Whale. The film shall be produced under the banner of Protozoa Pictures.
