Anthony Mackie, who has starred in the Captain America franchise, stirred the news with one of his comments while he was promoting his upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World.

The film has Anthony Mackie in the lead role as Sam Wilson aka Captain America, and it's a part of the next MCU phase. Directed by Julius Onah, it is slated to be released theatrically on February 14, 2025, through Walt Disney Studios. During the film's promotion in Italy, the actor said something that irked people on the internet. Subsequently, he had to clarify his stand on the superhero character.

Anthony Mackie clarifies his statement

As per Deadline, Anthony Mackie was promoting Captain America: Brave New World in Rome when he said that Captain America does not represent the term America. He said,

“To me Captain America represents a lot of different things and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable.”

Anthony Mackie received backlash on several social media platforms for stating that the film does not represent 'America'. He took to his Instagram story to clarify his statement. He said,

"Let me be clear about this, I'm a proud American and taking on the shield of a hero like CAP is the honor of a lifetime. I have the utmost respect for those who serve and have served our country. CAP has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to."

Captain America: Brave New World is the directorial work of Julius Onah while Rob Edwards, Peter Glanz, Onah, Dalan Musson, and Malcolm Spellman have written the screenplay.

The story is penned by Edwards, Musson and Spellman. Kevin Feige and Nate Moore have produced the film for Marvel Entertainment. The storyline will continue from the TV show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and it will be the 4th entry in the franchise. In terms of its positioning in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Brave New World is the 35th entry.

The film follows the aftermath of Ross becoming the President of America. Sam Wilson (played by Anthony Mackie) is faced with a real threat that he will have to overcome.

It also stars Danny Ramirez playing Falcon, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, and Xosha Roquemore among others. Harrison Ford will be seen as the Red Hulk in the film.

Talking about having Ford for that role, Onah spoke to Gamesradar and said,

"It's surreal, it's incredible, it's exciting. I gotta tell you, when Red Hulk first became a possibility in this film, I just smiled. I was smiling like a kid, and that's when I knew it was the right idea and right moment to put it out into the world."

He further said,

"The Hulk character is such an expression of pure id, but there's something about a rage Hulk that's so relatable and so exciting for an audience as well. But there's also a real thematic core to the expression of that anger in this film and what it means about the conflict at the centre of this film. It's not just the inner kid in me who is excited about it, it's also the director and the storyteller in me who is also excited about where this goes."
