$180 million are in, $420 million more to go. Captain America: Brave New World might be hoping to keep going at the box office to at least cover the entire budget that went into it. Especially after the mild reception of the film.
Though it is said that the film was made on a $180 million budget, Jeff Sneider, an industry insider, claims that reshoots pushed it to around $300 million, according to ComicBookMovie.
A general rule of thumb in the industry says a film needed double the earnings from its production budget to turn a profit. Despite the fact that this is a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, an additional $420 million is still a long shot.
Captain America: Brave New World earnings are pretty low
Captain America: Brave New World opened the domestic box office with $40 million, according to the data aggregator Box Office Mojo. But then it was seen falling as it earned $27.5 million, $21 million, and $11 million in the following days. Interestingly, it's currently the number one movie globally at the time of writing.
Talking about the global box office, The Numbers suggest that the film has grossed $92.4 million internationally and $88.5 million domestically, giving us an overall estimate of a little under $180 million. As of Presidents Day, the film is behind three superhero movies revenue-wise at the domestic box office: Black Panther ($242 million), Deadpool ($152 million), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($120 million).
While the two of them, Black Panther and Deadpool, went on to become global phenomena, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania failed to reach the heights it was supposed to; the same appears to be happening with Captain America: Brave New World. The third Ant-Man film opened with $46 million at the box office but failed to sustain the momentum.
The MCU franchise, consisting of Captain America films, is already among the highest-grossing superhero franchises with over $2 billion in revenue. Civil War remains the highest-grossing film among the three as it raked in over a billion dollars globally. The other two, The Winter Soldier and The First Avenger, brought in $714 million and $370 million, respectively.
The film did give the MCU a new world, but it wasn't really brave for the fans. But it did push the button for the Multiverse Saga after the credits rolled. Though we don't know if there will be another Captain America film, Anthony Mackie will be there playing the role in the future MCU films. He wants to stay for at least ten more years, as he told Esquire Magazine in a recent interview.
