Vegan cookbook author, Sarah Kramer, was recently diagnosed with brain cancer.
Kramer hails from Victoria, British Columbia, and is known for writing popular cookbooks during the 2000s. Earlier this week, Sarah’s partner, Geri, announced the news and created a GoFundMe fundraiser. She wrote:
“Sarah was diagnosed on Monday [March 17] with an incredibly aggressive form of brain cancer. She has a large mass in her brain called glioblastoma. It is incurable. It is very unlikely that she will live past April.”
Geri Kramer, who came out as trans to her wife Sarah, mentioned her recent gender-reaffirming surgery. Revealing how she hasn’t been able to resume her work as a tattoo artist, Geri highlighted their financial situation. She wrote about the impact Sarah Kramer’s books had over many and added:
“It's my hope that all the people who's lives she has positively affected will find it in their hearts to make a small donation towards the costs of our lives as we navigate this time together. Donating to me will hopefully allow me to be able to spend as much time as possible with her, helping her live out her final days with grace and dignity.”
Geri concluded:
“I can't help but be hopeful that we can come together and help this one beautiful person that we all love so she can have a comfortable and cared for last days on earth.”
Geri also described her as the “great love” of her life and proclaimed that Sarah is the “single best thing that has ever happened to” her. The fundraiser she created also got the attention of many and has received collective donations of over $84,849 as of this writing. Currently, the GoFundMe campaign has a goal of $140K.
Sarah Kramer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013
The Canadian author published successful cookbooks in the 2000s, such as How It All Vegan, Garden of Vegan, Vegan A Go-Go!, and La Dolce Vegan. Parallel to her career as a vegan culinary writer, Sarah Kramer also managed a retail shop in Victoria. In 2013, she had to shutter her business after getting diagnosed with breast cancer.
Sarah and Geri briefly talked about the former’s diagnosis, her recovery path, therapy, and more in their podcast, Meet the Kramers. She beat cancer and became a shop manager at Geri’s Tattoo Zoo in subsequent years. The couple has been together since 1996 and rescued a chihuahua named Walter in 2018.
The pair has been quite public about Geri’s coming out story. On Meet the Kramers, they revealed how Geri first revealed her gender identity three months after their marriage and then came out again in 2020. Sarah Kramer recounted on their podcast:
“About three months after we were married in 1996, Geri came into the bedroom and said, ‘I think I'm trans.’ And then for various reasons, we brushed it under the rug, we didn't tell anybody, and we went on with our lives. So when she came to me last year [2020] and said, I think I'm a trans woman, I was like, this again? It wasn't new to me.”

The couple has expressed gratitude towards their followers after receiving overwhelming responses via GoFundMe. Sarah Kramer shared a selfie via Instagram Stories and wrote:
“Thank you to everyone for all the messages and support. I think I get to go home tomorrow! I can’t wait!!!”
Amidst the support that the couple has received, they have also asked everyone not to send any “unsolicited medical advice.” While the couple seemingly appreciates the messages, Geri mentioned that she and Sarah are only taking advice from the care team and making decisions accordingly to avoid complicating the situation further.
