Veteran singer Stevie Nicks gave a bit of interesting advice to Katy Perry ten years ago and that has made netizens go into a frenzy recently.
In an interview piece with Rolling Stone published on October 24, 2024, Nicks reflected on the conversation she had with Perry regarding ‘internet armies’ of female singers and how unpleasant they were.
Stevie Nicks replied that she was not on the internet and so she had no rivals but only friends. She said,
“I said, ‘Katy, I don’t have rivals. I have friends. All the other women singers that I know are friends. Nobody’s competing. Get off the internet and you won’t have rivals either.’”
Her statement has gained a lot of interesting reactions from netizens. One X user wrote,
“Can someone tell Nicki.”
Netizens commented how online social media trials make women rivals while others complimented Katy Perry for taking the advice.
“I love how katy took her advice and became the most supportive pop girl towards other girls, Stevie really clocked stan culture iktr,” a person commented.
“I F*CKING BURST OUT LAUGHING CUZ THIS IS EXACTLY THE TYPE OF PERSON I FIGURED KATY IS,” another internet user reacted.
"it’s true tho. although i feel like the media and outlets would still pit women against each other,” a social media user wrote.
Social media users hailed Stevie Nicks as ‘mother’ while others appeared to criticize her for bringing it up ten years later.
“she said this 10 years ago why is she bringing it up??? omg this Katy hate train is ridiculous,” a netizen reacted.
“Clocked her tea,” an X user commented.
“Stevie is mother,” another online user wrote.
Stevie Nicks previously said she didn’t have rivals and neither did Katy Perry
Stevie Nicks made a similar statement in an interview piece with The New Yorker in 2022. She expressed that fame, along with the Internet and other factors she disliked, often brought people down, though she hoped individuals could rise above it. Nicks added,
“I always think of Katy Perry and I having this long talk at the Corinthia Hotel, in London, once, and she said to me, this is probably ten years ago, she said, “So, Stevie, who are your rivals?” And I said, “I don’t have rivals.””
She continued,
“And I said, “No, Katy, I don’t, and neither do you. You are Katy Perry, you’re who you are, you do what you do and you’re great at it. I’m Stevie Nicks, I do what I do and I’m great at it. We don’t have rivals. That’s just ridiculous.””
Perry noted the presence of groups like the Taylor Swift and Katy Perry armies. However, Nicks dismissed the idea of getting caught up in it. Instead, she advised ignoring such divisive thoughts, as focusing on them only gave others control over the situation.
In the Rolling Stone piece, Stevie Nicks said she found the term “icon” somewhat challenging, as it conjured an image of a grand Greek statue of a woman in a cape. However, she accepted it, recognizing the hard work that had shaped her public image.
Reflecting on her song Sweet Girl, she described her career as a choice to perform across global stages, visiting numerous cities yet often seeing them only briefly.
