Shortly after Academy Award-nominated actress Cameron Diaz returned to the big screen with her latest action comedy Back In Action following a decade-long gap, the 52-year-old star has opened up about her willingness to work on a Mask sequel. Diaz was a lead cast in the 1994 classic superhero comedy, The Mask, alongside comedy icon Jim Carrey (who played the titular character).
During a promotional event for her newest Netflix hit, Back In Action, Diaz expressed her interest in The Mask sequel provided Jim Carrey joins in, per Access Hollywood. Earlier, Jim Carey had also talked about his urge to work on such a project given that the script is strong enough, as per his statement to comicbook.com.
In the 1994 masterpiece, Carrey played the role of Stanley Ipkis, an insecure and downtrodden bank employee whose life takes a 180-degree turn after he comes across a mysterious magical mask, a creation of the Norse God Loki.
Cameron Diaz and Jim Carrey have shown interest in a potential The Mask sequel
Cameron Diaz recently opened up about her urge to work on a potential The Mask project where she wants to see herself playing the iconic Tina Carlyle. Diaz jokingly said in a statement to Access Hollywood:
"If Jim’s on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one."
Jim Carrey (known for notable work in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind) has also talked about his interest in doing a sequel of The Mask, provided there is a 'right idea' for the movie. The Golden Globe-winning star also mentioned in an interview with comicbook.com:
"Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. "
He further added:
"If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things. I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just — things tend to change."
More about The Mask franchise
The Dark Horse Comics' creation The Mask was produced by Dark Horse Entertainment alongside helmer Chuck Russell. The movie is the first piece in the franchise that has been adapted from Mike Richardson's comic going by the same name.
The film was a box-office hit grossing more than $350 million globally and also received much critical appreciation. However, the standalone sequel Son Of The Mask, starring Jammie Kennedy, was a much lesser success compared to the 1994 project.
The Mask is currently streaming on Netflix, Prime Video, and Apple TV+.
