A recently released audio recording indicates that the woman who accused rapper Jay-Z of s*xual assault might be fake, according to reports. The recordings suggest that the accusations were false.
The accuser, who goes by Jane Doe, told two of Jay-Z's private investigators that the rapper was not involved in the incident. She further accused her lawyer, Tony Buzbee, of pressuring her into naming the defendant in the case.
A recording, recently obtained by ABC News and played on Good Morning America, shows Jane Doe telling the Jay-Z’s private investigators that the rapper was not even close to committing any s*xual assault. In the audio, she is directly asked if the rapper engaged in any wrongdoing.
“He was just there, but he didn’t have anything to do with any s*xual acts towards you?” asked one investigator.
To which Jane Doe responds saying “Yeah.” When asked directly about how Jay-Z was added as a defendant to the suit, Jane Doe alleges her lawyer, Tony Buzbee, pressured her into suing the rapper.
“He was the one that kind of pushed me towards going forward with him, with Jay-Z,”
Jane Doe first sued in December 2024, alleging that the rapper (Shawn Carter) and music mogul Sean Diddy Combs assaulted her at a party after the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
The suit was filed against Diddy in October, but was amended to include Jay-Z. However, the case was dismissed with prejudice in February 2025, meaning it could not be refiled.
More about Jay-Z’s response as Tony Buzbee denies claims
Tony Buzbee, a high-profile lawyer who is also representing several women who have accused Diddy of s*xual misconduct, denied any wrongdoing. He called the recording “a blatant lie” in a statement to Page Six, and accused private investigators of taking advantage of Jane Doe, he said:
"The investigators tormented, harassed, and tricked that poor woman and took what she said out of context."
For his part, Jay-Z’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, maintained that the tape speaks for itself, despite Buzbee’s denials, stressing that the woman stated no involvement of the rapper whatsoever.
“The only reason Mr. Carter is even involved in this is because she was pushed to include him by a lawyer,” he said.
Jay-Z sued Jane Doe and her attorneys, Buzbee and his partner David Fortney, for defamation. Alleging malicious prosecution, civil conspiracy, and reputational damage exceeding $20 million. His legal team also wants to interrogate Jane Doe to further explore her allegations against Buzbee.
