Drake has publicly declared whose side he's picking, in the legal feud between Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez, and netizens are not happy. During the DIRZZMAS livestream with Adin Ross, the Canadian rapper took a moment to say "Free Tory Lanez."
During the livestream, Drake can be seen taking a shot to toast Lanez, who is currently behind bars. He also raised a glass to his collaborator, Lil Durk, as he rallied for his freedom as well. The clip has since sparked varied reactions, many bordering on outrage.
Several users have expressed disappointment in the rapper for siding with a known convict. Here's what one user declared:
"Drake hates black women. Period."
The chatter didn't end there:
"Bro hasn't been same since beef with kendrick," someone noted.
"Drake will never give Tory a track because he don’t rock with him," another posited.
"Stream his music then," one user suggested, albeit sarcastically.
"Hiss is platinum. Nothing Tory released has released this year has charted in 2024. Megan has charted 12 songs, 4 are either platinum or gold. Tell him to go stream his music," yet another echoed.
Scores online chimed in to voice anger, though a few appreciated the rapper for support:
"It’s almost like when you throw an innocent black man in jail, other black men will support him," one user tweeted.
"Megan is about to add him to the harassment case," another jested.
"i love drake even more now," someone defended.
"hiss must have really scared him," one joked.
While the comments section was divided, a large number of users were visibly outraged over Drake's two-word comment.
Drake doubles down on his support for Tory Lanez as the latter backs him up in his latest track from behind bars: Here's what we know
Drake's shoutout to Lanez comes on the heels of the latter's latest track, Handling Business, which disses Drake's well-known rival, Kendrick Lamar. One of the bars goes:
"I have been praying and waiting for the day that people confront me the way he did, Drizzy."
Notably, this isn't Drake's first show of support towards Tory Lanez. Back in February, the rapper took to his Instagram Story to lobby for the latter's release, uploading a photo of the singer with the caption “3 you.”
While there was no further elucidation provided, netizens were quick to posit that it's likely Drake used "3" as a rhyme for "free," and as Billboard has speculated, it could even mean broken handcuffs.
As for Tory Lanez's case, just last week, Megan Thee Stallion petitioned the courts to grant her a restraining order against her convicted shooter, accusing him of harassing her from behind bars via proxies. Per The Guardian, the petition was filed in the Los Angeles superior court, and it lists the following:
"Even now, while behind bars, Mr Peterson shows no signs of stopping,” the petition says. “Despite being sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Ms. Pete, Mr. Peterson continues to subject her to repeated trauma and re-victimization.”
Tory Lanez was convicted in December 2022 of three felonies: Assaulting an individual with the use of a semi-automatic firearm, possessing a loaded, unregistered firearm in his vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
