The Extraction spin-off series has just received an official title. It will be called Mercenary, according to the reports from The Direct.

The series was announced on 20 February as part of Netflix's continuation of the Chris Hemsworth-led action thriller universe. It will be executive produced by Joe and Anthony Russo's (Avengers: Endgame) AGBO studio, which also backed the previous Extraction projects. French actor Omar Sy (Lupin, The Intouchables) will play the lead. Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead, The Shield) will serve as the showrunner.

Upon its announcement, the VP of Scripted Series at Netflix, Peter Friedlander, said,

“Audiences are in for a thrill as we delve deeper into the Extraction universe. With Omar Sy leading the charge, our collaboration with the Russos, alongside Glen Mazzara, fans can expect even more of the high-octane adventures they love from the Extraction franchise.”

During a recent interview with The Direct about Millie Bobby Brown-led The Electric State, Netflix CCO Angela Russo-Otstot revealed the series title.

"We have just announced a green light for a series called 'Mercenary,' which is part of the 'Extraction' universe and starring Omar Sy and we're thrilled about that one."

Netflix has officially greenlit Mercenary, a spin-off series based on Extraction, which itself was based on Ande Parks' graphic novel, Ciudad. It is supposed to be going on floors this September.

Its official logline, per Netflix, reads,

"Set in the high-octane world of Extraction, this action thriller follows a mercenary (Omar Sy) as he navigates a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, the series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing trauma, betrayal, and life-or-death choices."

Upon its announcement, showrunner and writer Glen Mazzara said,

“I’m a very lucky man. Omar is a huge talent. Joe, Anthony, and Angela have welcomed me into the AGBO family. The team at Netflix is truly the best I’ve ever worked with. Very lucky indeed.”

During an interview, Angela Russo-Otstot spoke in detail about Mercenary.

"It's an exciting opportunity to pursue a long-form narrative that explores many of the same themes that the first two 'Extractions' touched on will sort of come at a singular mission through multiple perspectives. And it's interesting to see how different mercenaries will have different allegiances and agendas and will be forced to make certain decisions that may be helpful or harmful to others."

While there is still no news on the Extraction threequel, Joe Russo confirmed a third installment during his April 2024 interview with GameRadar+.

"Yeah, we're developing it at the moment, figuring out Chris's schedule. Sam Hargrave is back directing. It's an interesting franchise because he's a very emotionally wounded character, so there's good storytelling there"
