Robert Pattinson's Mickey 17 has finally found its release date. It is now set to premiere at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival before its theatrical release in the United States.

The road to this Bong Joon-ho project's release was filled with hurdles. Mickey 17 was initially supposed to come out on March 29, 2024, but was postponed due to scheduling conflicts amid the 2023 SAG-AFRA strike, which delayed its reshoots and post-production. After that, it was scheduled to be released on January 31, 2025, but was pushed forward to April. Now, the release date has changed once again!

According to the latest reports, Mickey 17 is set to premiere at the Berlinale, aka the Berlin International Film Festival, in February. It will eventually be released in the US on March 7.

The sci-fi film will be director Bong Joon-ho's first directorial feature film release since his multiple Oscar-winning Parasite. The 2019 black comedy famously became the first international feature film to have won the coveted Best Picture Oscar.

The official IMDb logline for Mickey 17 reads:

"Mickey 17, known as an 'expendable,' goes on a dangerous journey to colonize an ice planet."

So, without further ado, let's dive into what this film is about.

Bong Joon-ho's Mickey 17 has been riddled with release delay issues for at least two years. Now, it is finally supposed to have its international premiere at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival in February. Shortly after, on March 7, it will be released by Warner Bros. (WB) studio in the US theaters. The delay is reportedly for securing the window for an IMAX release.

The trailer for this upcoming Robert Pattinson film was shown in Las Vegas during the 2024 CinemaCon. At the time, Bong Joon-ho, through an interpreter, called this film:

“A story about a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world. It’s a strange type of hero’s journey."

The film is adapted from Edward Ashton's 2022 novel Mickey7. It is supposed to follow Mickey Barnes (played by Pattinson), an "expendable" employee sent on a perilous mission to colonize the ice planet. Whenever he dies, a new version of him emerges with much of his memories. While the novel shows Mickey getting killed 7 times, Bong Joon-ho's film shows it 17 times! So, during the trailer launch, the director jokingly said:

“I killed him [Pattinson's Mickey] 10 more times!”

The South Korean filmmaker has written, directed, and also produced this project along with people from Plan B Entertainment and Kate Street Picture Company. It is his first feature film release since his Palme d'Or and Academy Award-winning Parasite.

Its ensemble cast includes Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice), Steven Yeun (Minari), Toni Collette (Hereditary), and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things), besides Pattinson in the multiple central roles.
