As Marvel's fifth phase gets set to unravel new stories and new heroes for fans of the MCU, fans have started speculating whether any old heroes from the previous phases will make a return on-screen. Even though all the original Avengers have ended their reign, making way for newer heroes to take the lead, rumors circulated that Doctor Strange might make an appearance in the latest Avengers: Doomsday.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Strange, previously killed fans' expectations by announcing that he won't return for any of the latest Marvel ventures and will be taking a hiatus. Talking to Variety about Strange's future in the MCU, he added details on what fans can expect from the sorcerer.
However, Cumberbatch seemed to have made an error in his statement as he clarified again that he would be returning in Avengers: Doomsday. Talking to Business Insider, the actor revealed that fans will see more of him in the new film as he said,
“I got that wrong, I am in the next one. Don’t ever believe anything I say,”
In the Variety interview, the actor also revealed more of the hero's plans for the upcoming Marvel films as he revealed that he will be featured in Avengers: Secret Wars, which is all set to release in 2027. He also added more about the character's future in the MCU, as he said,
“They are very open to discussing where we go next. Who do you want to write and direct the next one? What part of the comic lore do you want to explore so that Strange can keep evolving? He’s a very rich character to play. He’s a complex, contradictory, troubled human who’s got these extraordinary abilities, so there’s potent stuff to mess about with.”
What is Avengers: Doomsday all about?
Avengers: Doomsday will act as a sequel to all the previous Avengers films and has an elaborate, star-studded cast that brings together all of Marvel's finest. Although the plot of the film is not yet known, it features all the major characters of MCU, including Doctor Strange, Tom Holland's Spiderman, Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes, and Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson.
Fans who missed Tony Stark on screen are in for a real delight as Robert Downey Jr is set to return as Doctor Doom for Avengers: Doomsday. Rumors also circulated surrounding Chris Evans' inclusion in the cast, but the actor has denied any involvement in the project, announcing that he is retiring.
More information on Avengers: Doomsday has currently been kept under wraps.
