'Beauty And The Beast' star Josh Gad opens up about not being a part of Avatar
As reported in Variety, Josh Gad has recently revealed in 'In Gad We Trust' that, back in 2006, when he was a part of the production of the musical comedy Broadway The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, he was in a desperate need to get rid of it. That is when, as per the reports in Vulture, it was upon the suggestion of the producer David Stone, who asked him to get occupied in other projects in order to get rid of this, that led him to approach other projects.
James Cameron's Avatar was one of the first initial attempts Josh Gad made, as he tried his luck by sending his audition tape for the role of a close confidante of Sam Worthington's character Jake Sully, who was proficient about the Na'vi world and also served as the interpreter to the Na'vi clan, before Joel David Moore was finally roped in for that role in Avatar.
However, after Josh Gad sent his audition tape, he mentions:
“I put myself on tape and shortly thereafter got a call that Cameron wanted to fly me to Los Angeles for a final callback at his Lightstorm production offices.”
About Josh Gad not bagging the role of Jake Sully's close companion, Gad mentions that even though James Cameron was happy with his audition, his physical body type did not match with what James Cameron required for his character, as Gad reveals by saying:
“I apparently did not get [the role] because, while James Cameron was said to be thrilled with my audition, when I was turned into a digital Avatar, I supposedly looked like a tall, overweight Smurf.”
Avatar had received both massive critical and commercial success, having won multiple awards, including winning three Academy Awards and 2 Golden Globe Awards as well.
