As per the latest report from The Hollywood Reporter, the fantasy comedy franchise Barbie is set to return to the big screen as the sequel, Barbie 2, officially goes into production. Original screenwriters Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig will reportedly team up with Warner Bros. for the upcoming venture.
The first part was released in 2023 on the same day as Christopher Nolan's Oscar winner Oppenheimer and grossed approximately $1.4 billion at the box office. Following Barbie's (2023) success, it was only a matter of time till speculations of a sequel gathered pace.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Baumbach and Gerwig were the ones who approached Warner Bros. with the idea of a sequel. Their story pitch was reportedly solid enough to convince the studio to start working on the project.
Is Barbie 2 officially in production?
While there were reports of Warner Bros. supposedly venturing with the Oscar-nominated filmmakers, the duo made it lucid that a sequel will be underway only if they find the appropriate story. Greta Gerwig reportedly said in a statement:
"My North Star is, what do I deeply love? What do I really care about? What’s the story underneath this story? If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more."
The development of the sequel Barbie 2 is supposedly in its early stages, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Now, if the deal between Gerwig and Baumbach and Warner Bros. is confirmed, the script would need a lot of work as Barbie (2023) did not end with an opening for the story to continue.
According to the report, Baumbach will start working on the script, and Gerwig will join in later. At a WGA West Q&A, the duo had mentioned that they write their pieces individually and share their drafts with each other during the process. Gerwig further added:
"Then we listen to hear if the other person’s laughing."
But, a Warner Bros. rep has contradicted this entire thing, saying:
"THR's reporting is inaccurate. "
This has been further clarified by a rep for the screenwriters, who has said:
"There is no legitimacy to this reporting."
Furthermore, Baumbach is working on his upcoming star-studded Netflix project, which is still unnamed, and post-production has kept him occupied. On the other hand, Gerwig is engaged with her next Netflix film's (an adaptation of The Chronicles Of Narnia) pre-production. So, adjusting the schedule for their upcoming movies with Barbie 2's production is also a big factor in determining the sequel's fate.
Is there a story for Barbie 2?
So far, we do not have any confirmation on how the story will continue in Barbie 2, and the plot is being kept under wraps by Warner Bros. Greta Gerwing reportedly told a WGA panel:
"I find whenever I’ve shared ideas too early, they become bad, then the movie’s not going to be any good. I don’t like to talk about things too early or pitch things or show treatments too early because it feels like it’s gonna somehow wreck what the movie is."
Lead star Margot Robbie's contribution as an actress and producer has been paramount to the first movie's success. The actor mentioned in a statement, complimenting director Gerwig:
"She cracked the code on this film, as only she could. It is such a singular vision, and Greta brought so much humanity, creativity, inspiration, magic and joy to Barbie."
