The BAFTA 2025 nominations for the best films have been announced, and Edward Berger's Conclave is leading the pack with 12 nominations.

This Vatican drama, based on Robert Harris's novel, has received recognition in major categories like Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director for Berger, and Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes. Isabella Rossellini is also nominated for Supporting Actress.

In 2023, Berger's All Quiet on the Western Front set records with 14 BAFTA nominations and won seven awards, including Best Film. Now, with Conclave, Berger is back in the spotlight.

This year's BAFTAs are the most diverse yet, featuring films from various genres like horror (Heretic, The Substance), musicals (Wicked, A Complete Unknown), historical dramas (Blitz), and action blockbusters (Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II).

Other notable films include Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez, with 11 nominations; Brady Corbet's The Brutalist, with nine; and Sean Baker's Anora, which received seven; and A Complete Unknown, with six nominations.

Performances by Timothee Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Hugh Grant (Heretic), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Perez), and Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun) have also been recognized.

The most diverse year in BAFTA history

If Berger’s name sounds familiar, it’s because his previous work, All Quiet on the Western Front, smashed records in 2023 with 14 BAFTA nominations and seven wins. With Conclave, he continues his streak of crafting unforgettable narratives.

Adrien Brody’s powerful role in The Brutalist has earned him a nomination, while the film itself is celebrated for its screenplay and cinematography.

Belfast-based hip-hop biopic Kneecap ties the record for most nominations by a debut filmmaker, proving that new voices in cinema are here to stay.

From Ariana Grande (Wicked) to Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice), the supporting categories are packed with unforgettable performances.

The BAFTA 2025 nominations showcase a groundbreaking year for cinema. Edward Berger’s Conclave leads the charge, but the competition is fierce, with films across genres making their mark. This year isn’t just about celebrating films; it’s about embracing storytelling in all its forms.
