Emilia Perez has just won the award for Best Film Not in the English Language at the BAFTA 2025, beating a strong contender like All We Imagine As Light in this category.
The two films have been head-to-head for awards since their premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where Payal Kapadia's Indian film won the Grand Prix award, marking it the first win of its kind for a film from her country. Jacques Audiard's musical won the Jury Prize and the Best Actress award, shared between Adriana Paz, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldaña.
Eventually, Kapadia and Audiard's films became major contenders in the 2024 award circuit. They also competed for the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, where Audiard's musical beat out Kapadia's Mumbai-based drama.
The 78th British Academy Film Awards have also been in favor of Emilia Perez, as it has bested All We Imagine as Light in this category. It has also won its star Zoe Saldana an award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Emilia Perez wins against All We Imagine As Light at BAFTA 2025

The 78th BAFTA ceremony, which took place on February 16, 2025, has awarded Emilia Perez over All We Imagine As Light as the Best Film Not in the English Language. This win comes shortly after the Golden Globe Award ceremony, where Jacques Audiard's film bested Payal Kapadia's in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Audiard and Kapadia were also in contention for the Best Director award, which went to Brady Corbet for his work on The Brutalist.
After their Cannes Film Festival premieres, Emilia Perez and All We Imagine As Light have been in discussion throughout the year. Set in Mumbai, Payal Kapadia's film follows three female migrants (played by Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam) as they experience life together. French filmmaker Jacques Audiard's Spanish-language musical also features predominantly female characters, pursuing their own happiness.
Kapadia's film received widely positive reviews, and it currently stands at a whopping 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiard's film received mixed reviews from critics and currently has a 17% Popcornmeter rating. The latter became a controversial title after its star, Karla Sofía Gascón's old controversial tweets resurfaced online. Now, Audiard's film will compete at the upcoming Oscars, where Kapadia's film has not received a nomination since it wasn't an official selection for the Best International Feature Film category from India.
Emilia Perez will compete at the Osars in 13 categories and will compete against Latvia's Flow, Denmark's The Girl with the Needle, Brazil's I'm Still Here, and Germany's The Seed of the Sacred Fig for the Best International Feature Film award.
