Director James Cameron, for his upcoming sci-fi sequel Avatar: Fire and Ash, in the Avatar film franchise, talks about making "brave choices" in an interview with Empire. After the massive success of Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), Cameron is readying Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is set to be the third installment of his five-part Avatar film franchise.

With Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron strives to incorporate changes and explore further. He teases about the unpredictability this film is about to bring in.


James Cameron talks about 'making brave choices' in Avatar: Fire and Ash

As opposed to the previous two installments of the Avatar franchise, James Cameron explains how things are going to take a turn in Avatar: Fire and Ash. The filmmaker, while speaking to Empire, says with the third installment he is taking a plunge by making some "brave choices," and taking the viewers to places "they won't expect."

On the importance of going ahead of the curve, Cameron states not making brave choices results in wastage of time and money. He also opens up about how essential it is to explore creative possibilities and usher innovative changes.

James Cameron, with Avatar: Fire and Ash, wnts to focus on divulging into developing more intricacies in the storyline and the characters of the ongoing saga, along with advanced action scenes. He elaborates:

“You can get your blood up in this movie. But what excites me as an artist who recently turned 70 and has kind of done all that stuff is not only the opportunity to get to do it again, but to get to a level of character and intrigue you haven’t seen before in an Avatar movie.”

The filmmaker seems to be contented as well as excited about the latest developments in the process of Avatar: Fire and Ash, identifying a correlation in terms of the process with Avatar: The Way of Water. He says the creative process is less intimidating to him now, and adds that he and his team are getting to a more progressive state.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will witness a new clan — The Ash Clan — along with an additional new character named Varang, the nefarious leader. The sequel brings back Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, along with Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang. Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis join the star cast.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled to be released on December 19, 2025.
