Atlanta City Council declares Rich Homie Quan Memorial Day on September 17 following the rapper's passing earlier this month

On September 17, Atlanta City Council announced the inaugral 'Rich Homie Quan memorial day' after the rapper was laid to rest at his funeral.

Quan's funeral was live-streamed and had over 50,000 fans. While announcing the memorial day, Council member Michael Julian Bond said,

"We have a proclamation, which is the honour that the city can present to any man, woman, place or thing...At just 23-years-old, Rich Homie Quan took the music industry by storm by recording the 2008 smash 'Stay Down.'

Michael Julian also added that the rapper's career advanced his hometown Atlanta's "tradition of innovation" and won multiple gold and platinum records proudly representing his hometown.

Hip-hop star Rich Homie Quan died in Atlanta at his home on September 5 at the age of 34. The rapper's girlfriend Amber Williams found him unresponsive lying on a couch as per TMZ.

Amber immediately dialed 911 and informed the dispatcher that Quan "was not breathing." As per an audio recording obtained by TMZ, Amber can be heard saying,

"I don't feel a heartbeat. I don't see him breathing."

Williams then took to her social media account after Quan's passing saying,

"I am traumatized from a moment that'll forever be in my head."

The exact reason behind his death still remains unknown.

During the time of his death, a statement by the rapper's family was shared with PEOPLE, saying,

"On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the Lamar family lost our beloved son, brother, father and friend. Known to the world as Rich Homie QUan, Dequantes Devontay Lamar was a proud native of the great city of Atlanta, Georgia and reprsented for the A as he and his music traveled across this globe."

Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan aka DeQuantes Lamar is the eldest of three siblings. He gained recognition after his 2008 song Stay Down featuring the Stack Money Boys became a hit.

His 2013 song Type of Way also became a hit and several other rappers including Jeezy and Meek Mill got together for a remix. In 2018, the rapper released his first and only studio album Rich as in Spirit which included tracks Think About It featuring Rick Ross.

Lamar is survived by his family, his girlfriend, and his five children; sons, Devin, Royal, Khosen and Layor, and a daughter Alayna.

An autopsy was performed on September 12 by Georgia's Fulton County medical examiner, and the cause and manner of demise are still pending.
