Things are looking slightly better for Disney's live-action adaptation of Snow White, as the film rises in box office collections. The weekend numbers for the film rose to $85 million- which makes the film one of the highest earners so far this year, considering the bleak performances of Robert Pattinson's Mickey 17, Robert De Niro's Alto Knights and Jack Quaid's Novocaine. Although the numbers are still less in comparison to other Disney live-action projects, it's an indication that the film has chances to make back the $270 million it spent in production.
However, criticism surrounding the film has still taken a toll as Snow White's Rotten Tomatoes score has gotten lower and lower. Starting off with a 45% score, the film now sits at 42%, and has been declining ever since its release. Other than that, backlash and conversations surrounding the film have stayed intact, as it becomes one of the most controversial films of the year if we leave out Captain America: Brave New World's controversy surrounding Anthony Mackie's comments about America.
Critically, audience reviews of the film have been neutral, as moviegoers had diverse opinions on Rachel Zegler's portrayal of Snow White in the film. Some praised the film's freshness and Zegler's performance, while many criticized the story's woke premise and how it strayed far from the original 1937 classic.
What these numbers could mean for Snow White

The film has performed considerably less than what Disney would have liked, but it's still a good number if we compare it to Disney's past experience with the live-action Mulan, which could only bring in $69.9 million worldwide. But Snow White still has a long way to go to reach the success of the live-action adaptations of Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella, both of which earned $1.263 billion and $201.2 million, respectively.
Much of the film's poor performance can be accredited to Zegler's poor taste in words when it came to Snow White; the actress frequently got into red carpet interviews where she criticized the beloved tale, angering fans who have held the classic close to themselves. To make matters worse, Zegler and Gal Gadot's political opinions have also had an impact on the film's performance as they both have very clearly expressed their stances on the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Other than that, the studio has faced severe criticism for it's use of CGI for the seven dwarves, inviting in outrage from actors with dwarfism who criticized Disney for denying an acting opportunity for actors with dwarfism. More criticism has followed surrounding the film's woke presence and it's omission of the prince from the story completely.
Snow White is available to watch in theatres now.
