Three members of the metalcore band As I Lay Dying, drummer Nick Pierce, bassist Ryan Neff, and guitarist Ken Susi, have announced their departure from the band.

In addition to the performing members, the band’s tour manager, Alex Kendrick, has also decided to leave. The three members have cited individual reasons for leaving the band on their Instagram.

Nick Pierce announced that he had stepped down as the drummer, expressing disappointment as this wasn’t the ending he had envisioned. He shared that he felt it necessary to distance himself from the band to prioritize his health and integrity.

He wrote that he was proud of his contributions, including touring and recording drums for the band’s new album, and looked forward to continuing his drumming career with new opportunities.

Ryan Neff also shared that he had decided to leave As I Lay Dying after careful reflection, believing it was the best choice for his personal and professional growth. He appreciated the experiences and connections he had gained and thanked fans for their support.

Ken Susi revealed that he, too, had ended his time with the band, thanking supporters who had followed him from his days with Unearth to his role in As I Lay Dying. He added that his values had recently been challenged to a breaking point, marking what he felt was a sad conclusion to what could have been a powerful second chapter for the band. He ended his statement by saying he would miss performing on stage and was open to new opportunities as a guitarist.

Present member of As I Lay Dying Phil Sgrosso said he would make a statement soon

Reportedly, the only members still in the band are frontman Tim Lambesis and longtime guitarist Phil Sgrosso. In a post on October 24, Sgrosso mentioned that he planned to discuss his position with the band further once there was a clear direction for moving forward.

As I Lay Dying recently addressed on social media the removal of their 2019 album Shaped by Fire from various streaming platforms, explaining the reason behind the takedown and indicating they would share more information on the band’s status soon.

Tour manager Alex Kendrick revealed that he had also stepped down from his role. In a since-deleted tweet, he shared that he was no longer with the band and expressed his desire for privacy, noting that he wouldn’t answer any questions. He reflected on the lasting memories he had made and described his time with the band as a closed chapter.

Despite the recent lineup changes, As I Lay Dying is still scheduled to release its eighth studio album, Through Storms Ahead, through Napalm Records on November 15, 2024. The album includes contributions from the former members Neff, Susi, and Pierce, with guest performances by Alex Terrible of Slaughter to Prevail and ex-Lorna Shore vocalist Tom Barber.

In 2014, frontman Tim Lambesis received a six-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to attempting to hire a hitman, who was an undercover officer, to kill his then-wife, Meggan Lambesis, for $1,000 (£630). After his release on parole in December 2016, Lambesis posted a statement on the band’s official Facebook page, publicly expressing regret for his actions.

Guitarist Nick Hippa, drummer Jordan Mancino, and bassist Josh Gilbert departed from As I Lay Dying earlier in 2020.
