Are Tony Hawk and Kurt Cobain related? Skating legend honors Nirvana's iconic frontman with touching tribute

Tony Hawk recently took to social media to pen a heartfelt tribute to Kurt Cobain.

Kurt Cobain and Tony Hawk are related by the marriage of their kids. Hawk’s son, Riley, is married to Kurt’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. Apart from being the father-in-law of Kurt Cobain’s only child, Tony Hawk also shares a grandkid with the late Nirvana frontman.

Hawk penned down a post and shared it on his Instagram stories, along with a picture of a Nirvana show from October 1991. Tony started by sharing a brief anecdote about his memory of witnessing Cobain and Nirvana in a concert,

“Went straight from S.U.A.S. Event at Houston Skatepark to this concert in 1991. It was as transformative as Live music can possibly be; We all experienced something rare and powerful that night. The world would never be the same.”

He also shared his desire,

“I wish Kurt were here so he could see the incredible woman his daughter has become, meet her devoted, caring husband, and hold our wondrous grandchild.”

Frances was born in 1992 and barely two years later Kurt Cobain died tragically. Before ending his life in 1994, Cobain also wrote a note, which concluded with a mention of Frances,

"Please keep going Courtney for Francis. For her life will be so much happier without me. I love you. I love you."

Riley Hawk and Frances Bean Cobain welcomed their son, Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk, in September last year.

Kurt Cobain and Tony Hawk’s children married in 2023, after two years of relationship

Frances Bean Cobain and Riley Hawk reportedly met through mutual friends and reportedly started dating in 2021. At the start, they kept their relationship private but started appearing on each other's social media posts. The couple also made public appearances and got engaged somewhere around 2023.

In October 2023, Tony Hawk’s son and Kurt Cobain’s daughter tied the knot in LA. Frances’ godfather and R.E.M.'s lead singer, Michael Stipe, officiated their wedding. Almost a year after their marriage, Frances and Riley’s son Ronin was born. Riley announced the news on Instagram by sharing the pictures of the newborn and writing,

“Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk / ✨ Welcome to the world most beautiful son. We love you more than anything ✨”

Tony Hawk also shared a picture with his grandchild recently and captioned it,

"What happens when all of your kids can skate on their own and no longer rely on you to give them rides? You wait until they have their own kids. Circles (wheels?) of life."

Unlike her musician parents, Frances is a model and a visual artist. Riley Hawk followed his father Tony Hawk’s path and became a skateboarder. He is also the frontman of the punk band Warish.

Frances Cobain was previously married to Isaiah Silva, the lead singer of The Eeries. The former couple married in 2014, but got divorced three years later.
