President Trump commented on the first round of the 2025 NFL draft and expressed his support for Shedeur Sanders, who remained on the board as the 2025 draft’s Day 1 ended. The President of the U.S. reprimanded team owners who failed to recognize the potential Sanders displays as the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders.
Taking to Truth Social, President Donald Trump noted:
"What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID? Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He’s also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness. He should be “picked” IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!"
A quarterback with the Colorado Buffaloes, Shedeur Sanders was projected to be a top-five pick in the draft, as per the New York Post. While considered one of the best quarterbacks in the draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., USA Today notes that as a contentious and debatable position.

Deion Sanders, who played in the NFL for 14 seasons, became a part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011. The NFL star won two Super Bowls over his long career, first for the San Francisco 49ers and then for the Dallas Cowboys. Presently, he coaches the Colorado Buffaloes.
The relationship between Deion Sanders and President Trump
Although the fields of politics and sports are widely disparate, this isn’t the first time that Deion Sanders and President Trump have been associated. A week ago, MSN reported that Fox Sports journalist Doug Gottlieb compared President and the football coach. Linking the kind of loyalty commanded by President Trump and Sanders, Gootlieb said:
“It’s the complete and utter blind allegiance that is required in order to do business with the president… The same is true for Deion Sanders”
While Deion Sanders hasn’t publicly expressed support for President Trump, he has criticized former President Obama while on a tour to support Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, which the former Vice President ended up losing to Donald Trump.

In October 2024, The Hill reported that President Obama, while addressing a rally in Arizona, spoke about the upcoming game between the Colorado Buffaloes and the Arizona Wildcats, saying:
“Colorado’s got a couple of good players. I also know you guys have beaten them twice in a row. Don’t bet against the Wildcats tomorrow.”
Later, The Hill reported that Coach Sanders took offense at President Obama’s support of the Wildcasts, and said:
“President Obama is everything to me. I mean, I love him, I admire him, I respect him tremendously. But I heard what he said, you know. President, I heard what you said, man. Like, c’mon. C’mon…I really don’t get into politics. I’m into people, because politicians they play the political game,” Sanders said. “And he was here, and had to play the political game.”
Members of Deion Sanders’ family are also frequently associated with President Trump. Earlier this year, the New York Post reported that Shilo Sanders, Deion’s son, compared the negative publicity he was receiving ahead of the 2025 draft with the news coverage of the President. Shilo said:
“If you just hate me, or you want to hate me ....paint me in a bad picture, they do that to our President, they do that to everybody, you know. So I’m not going to be safe from it. But it does get aggravating whenever you’re putting in work, and you’re working on your craft and people are just steadily destroying you.”
While the Sanders family might be frequently associated with President Trump, for now, it remains to be seen when Shedeur Sanders is picked in the NFL Draft.
