Disney's Snow White has been the subject of controversies from day one. From its casting to its depiction of dwarfs to the comments of its lead actor, something or another has been going on.
Helmed by Marc Webb, the film was released on March 21, 2025, by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Here's the official synopsis:
A princess joins forces with seven dwarfs to liberate her kingdom from her cruel stepmother the Evil Queen.
Amid all the noise surrounding its controversies, the film's IMDb rating continues to see a major dip days after its release in theatres. So, let's find out.
Snow White's IMDb rating sees a major dip
The rating of Snow White on the review aggregator site IMDb has taken a significant dip. Currently, it sits at just 1.8/10, which is lower than its rating at the time of the film's release.
Upon its release, the musical fantasy film received a mixed critical response, particularly criticized for its screenplay and deviations from the source material. It holds a 42% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has an average rating of 5.3 out of 10.
Snow White held its world premiere at Spain's Alcázar of Segovia castle on March 12, 2025, followed by its theatrical release on March 21. The film has been surrounded by controversies since its announcement. One of the initial concerns was the casting of Rachel Zegler as the titular character. Many took offense, noting that the character is described in the source material as someone whose skin is as white as snow. In response, the actress told Variety:
"[..] you don’t particularly see people who look like me or are me playing roles like that. When it was announced, it was a huge thing that was trending on Twitter for days, because all of the people were angry."
The actress also sparked controversy when she called the original film, the 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, outdated. After receiving backlash for the same, Zegler said:
“I just mean that it’s no longer 1937. We absolutely wrote a Snow White that... she’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love; she’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.”
Besides these controversies, actor Peter Dinklage also called out the film for its depiction of the dwarfs. In response, Disney stated that they had consulted people who have dwarfism to have a better portrayal on screen.
