Almost 2 years after the release of The Flash in 2023, director Andy Muschietti finally explains why the film failed, as revealed to Radio TU in his interview.
Andy Muschietti had directed commercially successful films such as Mama (2013) and the Stephen King book adaptation movie series IT (2017, 2019) before directing The Flash. However, The Flash received varied critical responses as the screenwriting and the visuals were panned, even though the action scenes, the comedic moments, and the performance of the cast were applauded.
The movie also performed weakly at the box office, earning only $271.4 million globally. The Flash was the first production venture of Muschietti and his sister Barbara's company, Double Dream.
What did Andy Muschietti say about the failure of The Flash?
While speaking to Radio TU, Andy Muschietti explains the reasons that led to the failure of The Flash, stating:
“Among all the others reasons, because it wasn’t a movie that appealed to all four quadrants. It failed at that. When you spend $200 million making a movie, Warner wants to bring even your grandmother to the theaters. And I found out in private conversations that a lot of people just don’t care about The Flash as a character. [Particularly] the two female quadrants, there are a lot of women who aren’t interested in Flash as a character. All that is going against the film I’ve learned.”
His opinion that the character of Flash itself does not appeal to the audience, especially to women, has received intense scrutiny from DC fans. They did not agree with him and rather cited the film's drawbacks to be the sole reason for its failure.
Other reasons for its failure were pointed out by people, such as the long postponements in the production, the casting of Ezra Miller owing to his legal controversies, and some suppose that the audience might not be into the 'superhero' mania anymore. Nonetheless, the unfavorable critical responses about the film contributed to its failure as well.
What do we know about The Flash- its plotline and the cast?
