There is something brewing about a potential Alien: Romulus sequel and it is likely that the film's director, Fede Alvarez, is planning something that may take the audience by surprise. He recently appeared in an interview with Empire, where he said that he is working on it alongside Rodo Sayague.

The commercially successful movie earned $350 million against its $80 million budget. Though critics praised Alien: Romulus owing to performances by stars Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, the use of nostalgic elements in the story didn't receive a pat on the back. As of now, it sits with an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Alien: Romulus might go in a different direction this time

Alvarez is crystal clear in his stand, as in, he doesn't want to make a sequel for the sake of a sequel but for the story. But he is open to the possibility that there is something worthy that should be made. The Alien: Romulus director tells Empire that,

"Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”

Fans must know that it doesn't mean that there will be a sequel until an official announcement is made. To add to this, in another interview with The Hollywood Reporter in August 2024, Fede explained that for him, it is all about a story and not sequels. So if he isn't convinced, then there might never be another sequel.

It is the same with the Alien vs. Predator crossover, as he is open to a third film but then he is all for stories. Both films have grossed over $300 million on the global box office. Talking about the separate franchises, Alien has earned around $1.25 billion and Predator has swiped in around $440 million.

For now, it seems like Alien: Romulus' sequel is in the ideation phase. The previous film in the franchise, Alien: Covenant, came in 2017, which translates to a seven-year gap between the latest in the line and it. If there is a sequel, it is likely that Rain (played by Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (played by David Jonsson) will finally reach Yvaga III.
