When the 2021 reboot of Mortal Kombat ended, we saw Johnny Cage on a poster of his in-film film, Citizen Cage. He was holding onto his belt with his name. Just before this final sequence, Cole Young (Lewis Tan), who turned out to be the descendant of Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada), was leaving for Hollywood to find him.

It seems like he found him, as we now know who was holding that belt in the film—it is none other than Karl Urban, aka, Billy Butcher. Now he is seriously a weeper. But that won't help, as he will be one of the Earthrealm champions in the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament. Talking of the tournament, Ed Boon sat down with Entertainment Weekly on March 17 and teased what's to come. He said:

"They keep score throughout the movie. There's a visual representation of who is winning.... It's not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes."

What are these twists? We can't really say for now, but we do know that dead characters are coming back for sure— something that was obvious.

It was made clear from the beginning of the first film that Earthream has already lost nine consecutive Mortal Kombat tournaments to Outerworld and losing the tenth means losing the Earth. The sequel will focus on the tournament only.

The franchise has established itself with a theme of bringing the dead from the back so we will be seeing the lost ones in the spirit world fighting in what would be a do-or-die scenario for them.

Details on it are thin on the ground but Greg Russo, the co-writer of Mortal Kombat told Collider in 2021 that he looks at this reboot as a trilogy where the first film, as we have already seen, is pre-tournament. The upcoming film is entirely based on the tournament, and the last one is likely to be the aftermath.

Other than Karl Urban's Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, and Ana Thu Nguyen, are joining in as newcomers Jade, Kitana, and Queen Sindel respectively, in Mortal Kombat 2. Shao Kahn, one of the major antagonists in the franchise, is coming in too, with Martyn Ford portraying the brutal character.

Mortal Kombat 2 is set to be released on October 24, 2025.
