A Minecraft movie has just reached a significant milestone post-release as the video game-inspired film continues to reach newer heights of success, thanks to a stunning ensemble and a fanbase that surpasses millions.
Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa in lead roles, the film has crossed $163 million at its domestic box office opening this weekend, with $150.7 million internationally, rounding off to a $313.2 million overall. This feat has surpassed Sonic the Hedgehog's overall earnings of $302 million, making it one of the most successful films based on a video game.
The film is now the second most successful one in 2025, followed by Deadpool & Wolverine in July 2024, which earned $211 million domestically. This is also Warner Bros.’ biggest domestic opening since 2016, when Batman vs Superman debuted at $166 million.
If things go well, A Minecraft Movie could very well become the biggest video game-based movie of all time, a record that is currently held by Nintendo's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $1,362,566,989. A Minecraft Movie currently comes 12th on that list.
Warner Bros. movie studio chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy issued a statement regarding the film's success as they said,
“We’re absolutely overjoyed A Minecraft Movie has been so warmly received by audiences around the world. A Minecraft Movie’s decade long journey to the screen was overseen with great care by WBP’s Jesse Ehrman and his team, and we are thrilled their efforts have resulted in such a tremendous response.”
What is A Minecraft Movie about?

Inspired by the same-titled computer game from Mojang Studios, the film revolves around four outcasts who are abruptly drawn through an enigmatic gateway into an odd, cubic wonderland that feeds on creativity. They must learn to navigate the peculiarities of their new environment and set out on a quest with an unexpected, skilled maker in order to return home.
The film stars Jack Black as the protagonist Steve, who is a struggling doorknob salesman, while Momoa stars as Garrett Garrison, a retired gamer who holds on to his past success as he attempts to ace the field again. They are joined by Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Jennifer Coolidge, and Danielle Brooks in an awesome ensemble that brought the pixelated game's characters to life. A primary factor in the film is the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal, which transports the characters to the Overworld.
Directed by Jared Hess, the film is written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, Chris Galletta, and Allison Schroeder.
A Minecraft Movie is currently available in theaters.
