Hollywood may be in a rough patch, but A Minecraft Movie is offering a much-needed relief with its overwhelming box office run. The Jack Black-and-Jason Momoa starter has now crossed a milestone, grossing nearly $344 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. With this number, it has already earned more than double its initial budget, estimated to be $150 million.
Ever since its release on April 4, 2025, The Minecraft Movie has been a point of immediate buzz. On its opening weekend, it earned $162.7 million, which is reportedly the biggest debut collection of 2025 as of now. Additionally, this number has put it ahead of every video game adaptation to date, which is a significant achievement, considering the more recent critical and commercial failure of Eli Roth's Borderlands, another video game adaptation.
A Minecraft Movie's success comes shortly after the underwhelming box office run of other 2025 tentpole projects, Snow White and Captain America: Brave New World. While Disney's live-action remake suffered from poor word of mouth, Anthony Mackie-led tentpole did not shatter the box office records as most MCU projects do. Unlike them, the Minecraft movie is not affected by the less-than-favorable critical reception.
In our recent report, we covered the major reasons that helped the Jack Black starrer succeed at the box office. One of them might be the Chicken Jockey social media trend that is currently picking up across theaters. This overwhelming success might lead it to pioneer a full-fledged franchise. We've already revealed how the post-credit scenes of A Minecraft Movie sets it up for a sequel. Considering the box office reports, it might see the light of day.
In its second week, The Jason Momoa is up against Ray Mendoza & Alex Garland's Warfare, Christopher Landon's Drop, and James Hawes's The Amateur. It is unclear how these projects will impact. A Minecraft Movie's run is going forward. However, it seems unlikely that they will drastically affect its future.
