A Complete Unknown has earned Timothée Chalamet his fourth nomination at the Golden Globe Awards for the Best Actor trophy, besides praise from critics, for his impressive portrayal of Bob Dylan. The James Mangold directorial follows the life of folk music legend Bob Dylan from the time he set foot in New York to his performances at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
The film shows Dylan as a talented 19-year-old songwriter who would go on to give American folk music a new direction. Besides Dylan, the film also features musical stars such as Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), Pete Seeger (Edward Norton), and Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook).
The soundtrack of A Complete Unknown features folk and folk-rock songs released between the early and mid-1960s. The film features the cast performing these songs instead of the original recordings by the singers.

The Live Recordings in A Complete Unknown
A Complete Unknown features songs performed by its cast, instead of using the pre-recorded versions of the classic hits. The idea of letting the actors sing the songs helped the makers capture the magic of live performance.
Chalamet, who previously showed his singing chops in Paul King's Wonka, surprised James Mangold with his singing skills.
While speaking with Hollywood Reporter, Producer Peter Jaysen echoed Mangold's sentiments about Chalamet's singing talent. When asked about Chalamet's vocal performance as Dylan, Jaysen said:
"we couldn’t tell the difference [between Dylan and Chalamet]. That’s when we knew that we had something special."
A Complete Unknown has been released in the United States on December 25, 2024
