On Valentine’s Day, Drake dropped the first post-beef content from his music catalog with the release of $ome $exy $ongs 4 U. The new album, a joint project with longtime collaborator, PARTYNEXTDOOR, was initially announced on February 3, as Drake was performing shows as part of his Anita Max Win Tour dates in Australia.
To some surprise, the album is all out R&B, and the title is part of a PARTYNEXTDOOR lyric from the record. $$$4U features a 21-song track list with only two guest features apart from the headlining pair. The piece is a meditation on the relationships with women both artists have in their lives, and they used the extended length of the track list masterfully to explore genres outside of R&B: club, drill, and even one tune with an old-school Mexican type of flair.
Drake used several moments on the album to share updates on ‘life after death’. He touched on his beef with Kendrick Lamar, his allies, and his current mindset.
$$$4U: Drake Touches on Hot Topics
Any thoughts about the Kendrick beef mentioned on the record were bound to be the most viral and widely analyzed. Drake addressed his mindset in the aftermath of that war on ‘Gimme a Hug’ (which already appears to be a certified hit), with bars like:
“Drake elimination, fake intimidation”
“Funny how it’s only bi**h ni**as waiting on the boy’s obituary/Cause if I die, it’s these ni**as that become the sole beneficiary”
“They be dropping sh*t, but we be dropping harder sh*t/F*ck a rap beef, I’m tryna get the party lit”
Later on the same track, Drake reflected on two of his remaining friends in the industry directly, 21 Savage and Melyssa Ford:
“Savage, you the only ni**a checkin' on me when we really in some sh*t, brother/Melyssa Ford, you a legend from the 6, hate to see you with a d*ck-sucker"
While Drizzy seems to be focused on doing his own thing, he also made a point to say that he doesn’t consider the feud to be over at all, as seen on ‘Brian Steel’.
“Bro just hit me ‘put all the beef to the side,’ I can’t.”
Many have speculated the ‘bro’ in question is Young Thug, who reportedly attempted to settle the tension between the hip-hop heavyweights.
