28 Years Later brings Danny Boyle back to the film series that began with his 2002 horror film. Ahead of its release, a new teaser has appeared online and features a haunting announcement. Watch it here:

The 15-second clip features a dreadful countdown in a veiled voice, which is also a part of the film's official trailer. It reads:

"Boots—boots—boots—boots—movin' up an' down again; Men—men—men—men—men go mad with watchin' em, An' there's no discharge in the war!"

While the 28 Years Later trailer offers a throwback to Boyle's past work, this chilling announcement does so too. It sounds like a muffled spoken-word recording, which makes one feel closer to impending doom. The words are part of a Rudyard Kipling poem titled Boots from his collection - The Five Nations.

The anxiety-inducing poem was written in reference to war from the late 19th century and was supposed to reflect the thoughts of the British military personnel marching toward their goal. That's why the poem is naturally recited in the cadence of marching footsteps.

It feels befitting in the context of Boyle's upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film, which shows its characters in a war-like situation in the wake of the horrifying rage virus plaguing a habitat. The situation, that began in the first film and spread in the second film has evolved in the latest one. Its official synopsis reads:

"A group of survivors of the rage virus lives on a small island. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors."

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland team up again for 28 Years Later, a threequel for their 2022 horror sci-fi classic. They have also collaborated on the 2007 film, Sunshine, and the 2000 film, The Beach. Garland's eponymous novel served as the source material for the latter film. Later, Garland and Boyle served as the executive producers on the second installment in this series titled 28 Weeks Later.

28 Years Later comes on the heels of Garland's directorial features, Civil War and Warfare, both of which cover warlike situations that reflect the paranoia in the global socio-political landscape. So, he seems like the perfect choice to scribe the latest film.

On the other hand, Boyle's most recent feature directorial was Yesterday, a light-hearted musical drama film starring Himesh Patel and Lily James. The latest film will show him returning to a deal with a terrifying plot.

The main cast of 28 Years Later includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O'Connell. The film is slated to be released on June 20, 2025.
