"My only hope is that you’re proud of me": Kevin Love mourns the death of his father, Stan Love, at 76

Stan Love, former NBA player and father of Kevin Love, basketball player for the Miami Heat, passed away on April 27 at the age of 76. The news was shared by Kevin Love on his social media, where he shared his memories and a heartfelt tribute by writing,

"Like all of us, my Dad was imperfect. But despite his flaws, and my own, we are a successful story of father and son. A never ending bond, rooted in love, that will forever remain eternal. Dad, I’m so proud to be your son. My only hope is that you’re proud of me. It was all I ever wanted. Thank you for everything."

In his message, Kevin Love honored his late father, Stan Love, remembering him as his 'first hero' and 'greatest teacher.' He reflected on Stan's final months, along with his love for family and the impact that he made on him.

The tribute also shared one of the most important lessons his father taught him by adding,

“The best last lesson one generation can teach the next: how to die with peace about how you’ve lived.” This may be my Dad’s greatest gift. Teaching me that healing happens in your soul and that healing is there for the taking, even in the face of imminent death. Dad loved his family unconditionally and left his children with one of life’s great lessons."

NBRPA CEO & President Antonio Davis pays tribute to Stan Love

The passing of Stan Love has come as a deep loss for his fans, colleagues, and the NBA community.

Antonio Davis, the current NBRPA CEO & President, released a statement reflecting on Stan Love's life and achievements that reads,

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Stan Love and extend our heartfelt condolences to the Love family, his friends, and fans. A standout at the University of Oregon and a member of the Oregon Hall of Fame, Stan Love went on to enjoy a successful professional basketball career in the NBA and ABA, playing for the Baltimore Bullets, Los Angeles Lakers, and San Antonio Spurs."

Before the Cleveland Cavaliers' Game 4 win against Miami Heat on April 28, Tristan Thompson, a Cleveland Cavaliers player, shared a heartfelt hug with former teammate Kevin Love, who is grieving the recent loss of his father, Stan Love. The gesture was appreciated by their fans, who also showed support for Kevin Love.


Stan Love played as a forward in the NBA and ABA from 1971 to 1975, primarily with the Baltimore Bullets and Los Angeles Lakers.
