Terrifier 3 and Joker 2 have been throwing their hats in the ring when it comes to the box office numbers. These two murderous clowns are all set for a face-off to get to the top spot. This battle wasn’t something any of us expected.

On one side, we have the ultra-violent indie horror sensation Terrifier 3, where Art the Clown brings his kind of terror to the season. On the other, we have Joker 2, a follow-up to the hit psychological thriller that allowed audiences to explore the dark psyche of Gotham's infamous villain.

Terrifier 3, being an underdog, might ride high on the success of its previous movie. It being a low-budget movie might not impact its reach. It has the potential to climb up the ladder, thanks to the movie’s dedicated cult fanbase and the compelling gore scenes in the movie.

However, Joker: Folie à Deux has much to live up to. The first Joker movie raked in over a billion dollars and even went on to bag Oscars. Would this big-budget comic book sequel be able to catch up with the indie horror sensation Terrifier 3?

The results might surprise everyone. Let’s break it down!

The underdog: Terrifier 3

The year 2016 saw the launch of a mute, unnerving serial killer, Art the Clown, in the film Terrifier. Despite being low-budget, this movie exceeded all expectations with its ultra-gory scenes. The slasher movie became popular when the sequel was brought to life on the screens in 2022.

It became a hit, and even with minimal promotion and no major stars, the second installment managed to rake in $15.7 million globally.

With Terrifier 3 on the horizon, all eyes are on whether this indie gem can pull it off. With a score of 61% on Metacritic and 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, holiday cheer will come with a side of horror as Art the Clown is all set to terrorize the Christmas season in a small town.

According to LADBible, a person even threw up after watching the gruesome opening scene of the movie, while some walked out as their stomachs could not take it. There are claims that this installation is the most terrifying. The franchise's previous installments have also made people faint and fall sick.

The third movie is projected to open at around $10 to $13 million from over 2,500 theaters. But could it beat Joker 2? Some box office experts think so.

The heavyweight: Joker: Folie à Deux

On the other side of the ring, we have Joker: Folie à Deux. This was a highly anticipated sequel to the first Joker movie in 2019. Considering the first movie's success, which grossed over $1 billion and bagged multiple Oscars, fans walked into the cinema halls with sky-high expectations from its sequel.

Stand-up comic’s descent into madness resonated with audiences in a big way. Tears were shed, and hearts were heavy as people watched Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck in Joker 1. But Joker 2 hasn’t entirely lived up to the hype.

The star cast couldn’t help either. According to Variety, the movie opened to an extremely underwhelming $37.6 million. This is not the giant splash that the first movie made.

With 33% on Rotten Tomatoes and 45% on Metacritic, there is an expected decline in ticket sales, with projections showing a drop of around 70%. That could leave Joker 2 with as little as $9 to $11 million in its second weekend, making Terrifier 3 easily climb up to the top.

Are we looking at a possible box office clash?

Given the cult fanbase and strong positive reviews, the odds are looking good for the underdog, Art the Clown in Terrifier 3.

Lately, horror movies have been performing better than bigger productions. For example, movies like Smile, Barbarian, etc. have exceeded their expectations. Terrifier 3 may also be added to this example. The film will be released on October 11, 2024.
