The film's director, Christopher McQuarrie, gave an interview to Empire where he spoke of stunts that were extremely dangerous. He said:

"There are stunts in this movie that will melt your brain. There would be a day in Africa — any day in Africa — where Tom would go out and do something that topped anything he had ever done before."

Cruise added:

"I want to pin you to your seat, to give you a physical reaction, and engross you in the storytelling."

McQuarrie then said:

"I truly want to puke thinking about the stress. It was intense. He approached me to do number 20. And I said, "You're done. Do not anger the gods."

In February 2025, Cruise said that he passed out while doing a stunt for the film. He said:

“When you stick your face out, going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen. So I had to train myself how to breathe. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit.”
