The plot of Mickey 17
Bong Joon-ho’s unique skills shine through in this high-concept dystopian sci-fi film. The story explores the life of the lead character, Mickey Barnes, who is on a human expedition as an "expendable" employee to colonize an ice planet. Every task performed by Mickey is dangerous and death lurks around every corner.
But every time he dies, he comes back to life as a new clone to carry out his tasks and duties. The number 17 in the title of the film suggests that he has died and come back to life 17 times.
However, every good story comes with a twist. This dystopian film turns the tables by halting the process of death and life as Mickey refuses to be replaced by the next clone, Mickey 18. This means both versions of himself must coexist.
