Mickey 17 has been a point of discussion for several reasons. This Robert Pattinson starrer showed director Bong Joon-ho's return to screen. It dealt with the themes of class conflicts and workers' exploitation. This project is his third English-language film after 2013's Snowpiercer and 2017's Okja.
Pattinson's dual role has reportedly charmed viewers a lot and impressed the critics. The film is set in a dystopian outer-space world where Pattinson's character works as a disposable employee. He has to be a part of a wild adventure and it does not always bode well for him.
To get the details correct, the makers behind this Warner Bros. Pictures production primarily used a UK-based studio site to film its vital scenes. It allowed them to let their imagination run wild and bring their ideas onto the screen.
Where was Mickey 17 filmed? Filming location explored
Mickey 17 was shot mainly inside the environment of a film production studio. Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden is the confirmed location used for its filming.
Leavesden
Leavesden is a part of Warford, England. Set on the northern side of this town, it offers a commercial space for numerous projects. It is home to The Warner Bros. Studios complex. This studio in the East of England is reportedly 20 acres long.
Its vast stage space offers the kind of flexibility and creative freedom that filmmakers might not get on actual locations. So, it has previously been used for filming big-scale projects such as the Harry Potter movie series. Even films like Margot Robbie's Barbie and Timothee Chalamet's Wonka were shot in these facilities.
Leavesden Studios must have offered the extensive space, time, and infrastructure required for Mickey 17's world to live. Leavesden would have been ideal for the same reason.
Mickey 17: A peek behind the scenes of this sci-fi film
Director Bong Joon-ho recently shared his thoughts about his vision behind the film.
"Despite the joys of designing a sci-fi film, the characters in this movie belong more in grimy back alleys than in a sleek spaceship. Instead of fancy, polished ships, we chose to go in more of the gritty, cargo-ship route."
The Parasite director wanted the spaceships in Mickey 17 to look a certain way. It helped his futuristic world have a gritty appeal. This is particularly important for a film that covers relevant political issues in outer space. The non-sleek look of ships helps the film offer a tonal contrast between its characters with different social statuses.
Despite its heavy themes, the film is also a whimsical black comedy. In line with this, Robert Pattinson reflected on his working experience with Bong Joon-ho,
"Bong has this joyfulness to him, which does feel quite strange. We were shooting this montage of grotesque deaths and he just had this lightness to his touch. There's something so playful and almost childlike — it inspires a lot of trust in him."
In another interview, Pattinson said,
"I just remember [director Bong Joon-ho] saying, when he was in the edit, 'I'm trying to land a 747 on an inch-wide runway.' He's literally the only director who could have made something like this. It's sort of a unicorn."
Sources say that Mickey 17 will have its digital release on March 25. It will be available on VOD platforms like Apple TV, Prime Video, and Fandango at Home.
