Memes & Nightmares will premiere on Hulu on Thursday, February 20, 2025. The documentary will be streamed exclusively on Hulu. You will need an active subscription to the streamer to watch the film. The platform offers a with-ads subscription plan at $9.99 a month and a no-ads plan at $18.99 a month.
What is Memes & Nightmares about?
The documentary film revolves around NBA Twitter (now called X), a digital community of basketball fans who have turned the game into a cultural phenomenon via memes and viral posts.
The story begins when the J.R. Smith squinting meme, credited as the most popular NBA meme of all time, vanishes from the internet. Two men then take it upon themselves to investigate the meme’s disappearances and travel far and wide to gather evidence.
Whether they can bring it back to the digital world, is a question that could be answered by the end. The official synopsis for the documentary reads:
“Memes & Nightmares is a hilarious and insightful satirical film that dives into the vibrant world of NBA Twitter.”
“Guided by the witty and iconic social-media personality Josiah Johnson (aka King Josiah) and his equally hilarious co-star Jamel Johnson (no relation!), the film weaves a dark, satirical buddy-cop mystery as “the Brothers Johnson” unravel the culture of memes, viral moments, and digital fandom that have turned basketball into a 24/7 cultural phenomenon.”
Who stars in Memes & Nightmares?
The documentary features Josiah Johnson, who is known as NBA Twitter’s meme king. He teams up with Jamel Johnson, an NBA podcaster, to investigate the case of the missing meme. Additionally, the docufilm features several sports stars and celebrities. Former basketball player J. R. Smith makes an appearance in the film.
Other celebs who are set to appear include hip-hop artist Flavor Flav, sports analyst Jalen Anthony Rose, sports reporter Jemele Hill, comedian and actor The Kid Mero, and sports broadcaster Ros Gold-Onwude. Former pro players Metta World Peace, Gilbert Arenas, Darius Miles, and Matt Barnes will also be seen.
The project has been directed by Charles Todd and Matt Mitchener and executive-produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter. The production companies include Scheme Engine, PepsiCo Content Studio, Starry, and Uninterrupted.
The documentary premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2024, after which it was acquired by Disney & ESPN’s Black content studio, Andscape. Talking about the project, Jason Aidoo, the VP and head of Andscape said in his official statement:
“Memes & Nightmares is a brilliant and humorous dive into the world of sports memes, making it a perfect addition to our slate. We are thrilled to bring this project under the Andscape banner and to the Hulu audience.”
