Alright, Marvel, what’s up with Avengers: Doomsday? First, you gave us a Multiverse so tangled even Doctor Strange needed a GPS. Now, you’re tossing animated characters into live-action.
According to The Cosmic Circus, Avengers: Doomsday is set to feature animated characters standing shoulder-to-shoulder with live-action heroes.
And yes, they’re staying animated. That means we’re about to witness a scenario where Iron Man 2.0 might be chatting it up with a 2D Miss Minutes while Doctor Doom broods in the background.
The Cosmic Circus writes:
“Marvel Studios has been exploring ways to bring their animated properties into this film, reportedly maintaining the animated format of their characters as well as their respective universe, instead of transitioning a character from animated to live-action and vice versa.”
Marvel fans are panicking. One minute, they’re theorizing about Kang’s master plan, and the next, they’re staring at their screens trying to figure out how cartoon physics and MCU logic are about to co-exist.
Users have been spiraling, questioning how a multiverse is supposed to accommodate animated characters without breaking reality (again).
A recurring theme in the online discourse is that they knew something off was coming. But no one had a “live-action/animated crossover” on their Marvel Bingo card.
Social media reacts to Avengers: Doomsday mixing animation and live-action
There’s doubt about whether they can properly execute this new direction, with users saying they knew Marvel would fumble Avengers: Doomsday somehow.
One disappointed user @RiftJonesy stated:
"We ALL knew this was gonna happen."
Another user @Sebastrigol added:
"Oh hell no please be fake."
One user @Durgwer simply put it as:
"This is one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard."
Fans are not feeling the idea of mixing live-action and animation in the MCU, with many saying the two just don’t go hand in hand.
A user @Ryanm7288 straight-up mentioned:
"Hot take: Animated and Live Action don't mix."
Meanwhile, some fans are frustrated that Marvel execs are still stuck in the “idea phase” instead of actually starting production for Avengers: Doomsday.
A user @adison_jurassic pointed out:
""exploring ideas" 💀 Feige you're shooting in few weeks, time for exploring ideas was a year+ ago."
One dramatic user even took it to the next level, saying they’ve seen enough and refuse to tolerate any more MCU missteps, especially for Avengers: Doomsday.
A user @El0nZuckerburg hilariously mentioned:
"if i see captain carter come out of a tva portal in the final fight against doom im shooting myself."
One user provided a hilarious visual scenario of Avengers: Doomsday.
Avengers: Doomsday and the concept of blending animation and live-action
Speaking of animated characters, What If.? has already demonstrated that Marvel is not shy to embrace animation as a serious medium of storytelling.
Now, word is that characters such as Miss Minutes, The Watcher, and even Exiles members will be showing up, looking down from the Fifth Dimension as we, the mere mortals here, attempt to make sense of all this.
In a way, this isn't so new.
As long ago as 1988, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? got it right and, in doing so, created a world in which cartoon characters and humans have coexisted with impressively credible rationale.
And then there was Space Jam (1996), in which Michael Jordan had to deal with playing basketball with Bugs Bunny and his cartoon team.
If Warner Bros. could get it done, then perhaps Avengers: Doomsday can pull this off too. If not, it’ll just be another chapter in the franchise’s decline.
