Luke Combs has opened up about his lifelong struggle with a rare form of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) known as "purely obsessional" OCD.
In an interview with 60 Minutes Australia on March 10, 2025, the 35-year-old Country singer detailed how his condition has impacted his life since the age of 12. He described it as “particularly wicked” and, at times, “debilitating.”
As reported by Page Six, he said
“It’s thoughts, essentially, that you don’t want to have … and then they cause you stress, and then you’re stressed out, and then the stress causes you to have more of the thoughts, and then you don’t understand why you’re having them, and you’re trying to get rid of them,"
Combs added that since he has been battling it for more than two decades he knows “how to get out of it now.” He said, “The less that you worry about why you’re having the thoughts, eventually they go away.” He noted that the OCD can flare up on stage and that it can be “all-consuming.”
But, was it the first time he has opened up about his mental health condition? Let us explore this in detail.
Exploring the health struggles Luke Combs faced in his past
It is not the first time Luke Combs has experienced OCD. On a 2021 episode of AXS TV's The Big Interview, he shared that the first time he experienced the symptoms was when he was in middle school.
"Essentially, my version of messing with the blinds or straightening the carpet are thoughts that I play over and over in my head," Combs said.
"[For example,] it'll be something about my health. I'll be worried that I'm ... about to have a heart attack, or a stroke. It becomes this very obsessive thing that I, you literally can never have an answer to." The singer said, as reported by USA Today.
In a 2022 episode of Apple Music’s The Zane Lowe Show, Combs spoke about his health struggles and how he desperately wants to shed his excess weight to be ready for his newborn son.
“I do pig out. I’m not trying to say it’s not my fault because it is in a lot of ways,” Combs said. “I’m like, man, I’d really love to trim down. And it’s so hard for me to do that.”
“This having a kid thing has really messed up my head on this thing in the best way,” he added revealing about his son. “I want to be around, dude. Do you know what I mean?”
Combs and his wife are parents to two kids - Tex Lawrence Combs and Beau Lee Combs who were born in June 2022 and August 2023, according to a report in People magazine.
