Lucy Dacus released her latest studio album, Home Video, on June 25, 2021. A year after the release of the album, the singer talked about her creative process and the connection between her music and the past in an exclusive interview with Nothing But Hope and Passion publication that was posted on December 15, 2022, stating:

"Through music I can reexamine and deal with past emotions. The thing about the past is that it keeps growing and it keeps changing. Every day there is a new day of the past. It grows layers like a tree and there are more rings around the memories each day and each year."

The singer later added:

"It is helpful for me when people who recognize themselves in the songs reach out to me. It makes me think about their perspectives."

The singer talked about her difficulty in writing about the present:

"I try to be self-aware, but I am slow sometimes and it can be hard to see who I am right now clearly. If I try to write about something that’s going on now my brain would still be like blank. Maybe eventually I feel safe and good enough to share those things – when they’ll be past."

Dacus also talked about the relationship between her and her songs and how they depend on whether the songs are based on positive emotions or negative notions:

"I have a different relationship to songs based on negative memories. They are much harder to sing, but they are also more impactful. Lighthearted ones are always such a relief to play during the show.”

Lucy Dacus has released three albums in her career so far, with Home Video being the third. Her debut album, No Burden, was released on February 26, 2016. Her second album, Historian, was released on March 2, 2018.
