Sam Zuchero and Andy Zuchero's debut film, Love Me, can make the viewers question their reality. It focuses on universal elements like consciousness and tech wonders like the metaverse, which many think is already a dead space. Twilight fame Kristen Stewart and The Walking Dead fame Steven Yeun will lead the way here.
Zucheros have already won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize for their efforts at the Sundance Film Festival. The award is given to tech-themed films bringing something new to the table. This is certainly one of the most innovative as well as sort of disturbing concepts that exposes us to a truth: "We become what we think of."
The film is distributed by Bleecker Street and ShivHans Pictures, the latter of which is also its co-producer. Critics aren't too happy with it, as the average ratings show, the highest of which is 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb at the time of writing.
When will Love Me release?
The film's premiere has already happened on January 19, 2024, during the Sundance Film Festival. Now, the theatrical release remains, which is scheduled for January 31, 2025, throughout the U.S.
WME Independent will distribute Love Me internationally, while Bleecker Street and ShinHans Pictures will do so domestically. The film comes from Zucheros' idea to pay homage to the future of the metaverse, which they came across during a keynote speech by Mark Zuckerberg.
What is the plot of Love Me?
The main characters in the film are one satellite hovering over space and a buoy sailing across an ocean after humanity is wiped out from the face of the earth. The digital beings somehow connect via the internet and begin communicating with each other.
They later wear digital avatars where the buoy assumes the role of Deja (played by Kristen Stewart) while the satellite takes the role of Liam (played by Steven Yeun) in the metaverse.
Sam Zuchero explained why they chose a satellite and a buoy for the roles in an interview with IndieWire. She said,
Buoys and satellites communicate all the time. We’re using the internet of things to monitor our ocean temperatures, how much the waters are rising, it’s something that’s actually happening. But to have them have the internet and no humans around and communicate with each other, we just thought it was funny.
This will be a film that portrays what we often call a "Matrix" in a more humanely possible way rather than stopping bullets from a hand.
The cast and crew of Love Me?
As humanity is a thing of the past here, just two beings are communicating with each other in the movie. Kristen Stewart plays Deja in Love Me, while Steven Yeun plays Liam.
The film's crew includes Daniel Bekerman, Christine D'Souza Gelb, and Connor Flanagan, who are the film's executive producers. Jim Brebner and Magali Briand served as the assistant directors for it.
What message is the film trying to give?
While that looks like a movie focused on artificial intelligence, it certainly is not, as Sam Zuchero has cleared before. However, there is an effort to create something unique for a change in the perception of how people see this technology. She believes that,
If we want this thing we’ve created to be a benefit to us, then we should be looking at it in a positive light and treating it kindly.
However, the fact that there's nothing left on our beloved planet is also a call for how we, as humans, are joining the club that's leading us that way.
