Locked ending explained: Did Eddie break free from William's car?

In Locked, Eddie is a small-time thief who is drowning in debts. He also has a daughter named Sarah, with whom he wishes to reconnect after gaining some capital. That is when he decides to rob this opulent, deluxe SUV car by putting up its parts for sale.

Little did he know what fate had stored for him. As soon as Eddie trespasses into the car, the car gets locked. He exhausts all his ways to unlock and come out of the car, but everything fails. In the process he even injures his leg by accident.

This car is owned by a wealthy man named William. He is the one who has orchestrated the entrapment of Eddie. Through an inbuilt system, William talked to Eddie through his voice. William had utmost control over the car, even though he was not physically present. He could drive and control the AC temperatures.

To further add to Eddie's miseries, the car is also soundproof, so Eddie could not even reach out for help.

However, towards the end, William and Eddie come face to face. William coerces Eddie for a life-threatening drive. During that time, both the men get into a heated argument where they taunt each other.

As Eddie is struggling his way to get out of the car, he finds the power off button of the car. As soon as Eddie meddles with it, the car suddenly moves forward and falls from a cliff. Eddie manages to get out of it, but William dies in the car crash.

Post the horrific incident, Eddie reconciles with his daughter, Sarah. He also proceeds to buy a bicycle for his daughter in exchange for his van.

Locked: What does the director say about Eddie's ending?

In an interview with The Direct, director David Yarovesky shared his thoughts about the ending of Locked, especially in relation to Eddie's character arc. He explained the core element of the story of Locked by saying,

"When you get to the end and really see what the movie is and the journey. I think you come to see that it's a story about a guy who thinks he needs some money to fix his van, but what he really needs is a better relationship with his daughter."

Eddie's character also witnesses transitions in the film, from being an absentee father to a more present one. It is the choice that he makes towards the end, as he buys Sarah a bicycle by vending it off his van. David Yarovesky further says,

"And he gets a better relationship with his daughter at the end of the movie. He has to go through hell to learn that lesson, but that's what it is. And I agree with you, it's happy, but there's a hint of melancholy in it. I mean, he's weeping at the end, you know? It was a really tricky tonal line to walk, to be honest. And on the page, it was scary. We went into it going, 'I hope this works.' But when we saw it, when we saw Bill on the day hugging his daughter like that, it was just emotionally powerful, and it worked. So that's the answer to the ending."
