There were a couple of men in that Black Panther suit; one was the iconic T'Challa, and the other one? The one who made T'Challa iconic was Chadwick Boseman. In Captain America: Civil War (2016), we all wondered who this cat-like being is and why he is chasing Bucky (Sebastian Stan), aka the Winter Soldier; he's gonna scratch his metal arm.
A couple of years later, they became friends, and T'Challa gave Bucky, who has given himself the alias of the White Wolf, a brand new metal arm. All this time, even when shooting the scenes, Boseman remained in character until the day of shooting was called off. Ryan Coogler, who directed Black Panther (2018), recently jogged his memory back to those days. He said while sitting in a studio of The Breakfast Club (via Variety) that,
"He was talking in an African accent. Disney execs came to see us on ‘Panther.’ It was week two and they pulled up and it was the T’Challa accent and they were freaked out. I was like, ‘Don’t be freaked out. He’s working, man. He don’t turn it off until we wrap.'"
Coogler himself has quite an accent, which was clear throughout the interview; we feel him being himself.
Chadwick Boseman's demise hit Michael B. Jordan the hardest
Michael B. Jordan, who plays the major antagonist in the 2018 movie, Erik Killmonger, was given a second chance when it comes to Marvel films. Before this, he had portrayed Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four's 2015 reboot, which was a disaster.
While talking about Chadwick Boseman's demise, he mentioned that it affected Jordan, with whom he recently worked on Sinners, alongside others. He said,
"Out of all of my actors, Chad's death actually hit Mike (Jordan) the hardest."
Following Chadwick Boseman's demise on August 28, 2020, Jordan wrote in his tribute,
"You showed me how to be better, honor purpose, and create legacy. And whether you’ve known it or not…I’ve been watching, learning and constantly motivated by your greatness."
They were opposite each other in Black Panther, but in real life, they were friends long before the film happened.
Boseman never spoke about it publicly
Though he was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, we never hear him speak a word about it. Everyone came to know of the details only after the news of his demise spread like a wildfire.
His family made a post on Twitter (now X), which became the most liked tweet on the platform within 24 hours of the news.
The Hollywood industry was in shock, especially his Marvel colleagues, and everyone gave their tributes to the actor.
While we know Chadwick Boseman mostly owing to his portrayal of the Marvel superhero, he had worked in a number of other projects, too.
In 2014, he stepped into the character of James Brown, who brought funk music to our lives, in Get On Up. That stands to be one of the unforgettable roles of Chadwick Boseman. The film currently holds an 80% critic approval on Rotten Tomatoes.
Following the immense success of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), he reunited with the Russos for 21 Bridges (2019), and last, he appeared in Da 5 Bloods.
There are rumors that Marvel is seeking a new Black Panther for the MCU. Sadly, they won't be able to replace Chad.
