Facing fear can literally change lives if one chooses to take a step ahead and La Dolce Villa is just about that. There's a different flavor to the film as a father, Eric (Scott Foley), who is trying to 'save' his daughter, Olivia (Maia Reficco), from being scammed, ends up entering a world that will change their lives.
Interestingly, though the film is centered around Olivia trying to renovate this home in Italy that's part of the one-euro house scheme, Eric's story is of the same importance here. Especially given the fact that he again finds love in Francesca (Violante Placido). Despite the complications, both eventually end up together in the film.
La Dolce Villa takes place in the fictional town of Montezara (which is inspired by a real-life winery called Monte Zara) where Olivia is trying to fulfill her and her now-deceased mother's. They always wanted to have a house in this beautiful country.
Francesca eventually catches up with Eric in La Dolce Villa
It's interesting how Eric thinks that his little girl is being caught up in a housing scam, which leads to him meeting Francesca. Both of them had a couple of things in common; they both were passionate about their work and were without partners. This becomes a foundational ground for them in the film.
Now that Eric knows this isn't a scam, he helps Olivia renovate the house while Francesca seeks to re-establish the region by attracting people and businesses in the town. As the story advances in La Dolce Villa, we see Eric and Francesca dating. Well, Bernardo (Tommaso Basili) sees it too.
This Bernardo man wants to be with Francesca so jealousy is a natural emotion here. So he brought with him a couple of twists in the names of Tracey and Larry Longo who claimed to be the rightful owners of the house Olivia and Eric had poured their heart into to renovate. However, after some legal scrutiny, they aren't able to claim it.
Bernardo was hoping that they'd lose the house and go back to where they came from, leaving Francesca behind for him. Interestingly, he almost got successful as Eric actually was about to leave but Francesca caught up with him at the train station and told him the good news: the home (and she) was his.
How three old women's small screentime saved the day big time
The three old women who were sort of the three watchers, like Eminence, Incarnate, and Executioner from What If...? in La Dolce Villa. But unlike the watchers, when things appeared to be crumbling, the women unexpectedly saved the day.
It is them whom Francesca hears talking about a couple of families with just a minor difference in the names. This prompted her to take a deeper dive into the city hall archives, where she found a loophole that saved the house (and her love).
Now that everything is clear, Eric sets up a cooking school in Montezara and hires the three elderly women to help him put up with it. It is revealed in La Dolce Villa that these women used to be renowned bakers of their time; what's better than having some veterans on board for the business?
That's one happy ending with Francesca and Eric together bringing that old house to life, and of course, a new life for themselves too.
