There are too many kids in Kinda Pregnant, though they are still in their mama's bellies. American stand-up comedian Amy Schumer, who has also proved that she has some serious acting skills, is in the lead as Lainy Newton, who has this weird obsession with getting pregnant. Don't tell this to despo men.
But she failed to capture the audience's attention here as Lainy. Her character has lost her mother at an early age, and that's the core reason she is so desperate to become a mom. So much so that when she is wearing this fake pregnancy belly and is congratulated by people, she decides to keep this fake belly rolling, of course, because she feels happy with all those greetings.
That happiness just adds to her desperation as, of course, that's what she wants. She wanted to be treated like a mom. But that kinda pregnant thing becomes a kinda addiction thing for her.
Lainy's mom left Lainy with a seed of motherhood
Before all that obsession overtakes Kinda Pregnant, a young Lainy is seen playing with her best friend, Kate. Lainy has assumed the role of a mom trying to give birth to one imaginary child. Kids, right?
Later, when everyone is a grown-up, Lainy befriends Megan Taylor (Brianne Howey), who asks her if Lainy and her mother had a conversation surrounding pregnancy. This is when she reveals her mom died when she was six.
Now, this reveal reveals why Lainy, as a six-year-old kid, was trying to give birth to a baby. She wanted to be a mother herself. But a six-year-old showing such traits is advanced for her age, but Kinda Pregnant since the very beginning presents her as one intelligent girl. So that's kinda believable.
When Kinda Pregnant becomes kinda fake
Jealousy could show itself between friends; it happens with Lainy, too, when she comes to know that her best friend Kate is pregnant. Now that we know Lainy is so desperate to become a mom, this is just a salt to the injury. Thankfully, this isn't a psychological horror flick, so all Lainy does is revisit her childhood. How? Let's see...
She fakes her pregnancy. The desperation we are talking about is, at some point, fueled by her anger when her boyfriend Dave (Damon Wayans Jr.) wants her to be a part of a threesome when she was actually expecting him to propose to her.
Anyway, Kate and Lainy are visiting a maternity clothing store where the latter finds herself a fake pregnancy belly. It's not long before people passing by congratulate her (of course, how do they know), and it doesn't take time to escalate.
Before we know it, that fake pregnancy belly becomes part of her daily grind, and she is playing mommy-mommy like she's a six-year-old again.
That fake belly soon becomes her obsession
While it's obvious that Lainy is obsessed with becoming a mom in Kinda Pregnant, this fake belly just adds salt to it. Once she got a taste of how people treat a pregnant lady, she wants to taste it more.
For the better part of the film, she is carrying this fake pregnancy belly with her, though it's not just this gimmick but her desire to appear pregnant to swap it with a balloon for a brief moment; hell, she even does that with a roasted chicken.
However, it all ends, and she lets go of this desire, and interestingly, more like magically, things become better for her.
