More on Kanye West's performance in China

Ahead of his performance, Kanye West posted pictures of his time in China during his childhood, where he lived in Nanjing with his mother, Donda, who was a Fulbright Scholar at the Nanjing University.

The picture shows West sitting at the bottom of the stairs, with two people behind him climbing down the stairs. The photo is simply captioned as: "BACK"

Kanye West also brought his kids to stage during the performance, featuring North, 11, Saint, 8, Chicago, 6, and Psalm, 5, during his rendition of the iconic Backstreet Boys tune Everybody.

The performance comes at a time when censors have clamped down on the presence of Western musicians within People's Republic of China, with few artists such as Taylor Swift allowed to perform within the second most populous country in the world.

It also came just after the release of the second album of Vultures trilogy of album by Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign. Titled Vultures 2, the album was released on August 3, 2024 after months of delay. The album was a major success upon release, charting at the number 2 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart as well as on the Norwegian and Swiss album charts, among other chart successes.

The album was released independently through Kanye West's YZY fashion and music brand and was sold directly through the singer's official store, with major labels refusing to work with him due to his controversial statements and anti-semitic remarks.

The album has sold over 100,000 copies since its initial release in the US alone and has gained the second spot on the most streamed album of all time on streaming services with over 50 million streams.
