Jeff Baena, filmmaker and Aubrey Plaza's husband, dead at 47 by suicide: Reports

American filmmaker and screenwriter Jeff Baena passes away at the age of 47, as per the latest reports. According to law enforcement's statements to TMZ, Baena's body was discovered in his Los Angeles residence on January 3, 2024.

Jeff Baena is survived by his 40-year-old wife and American actress Aubrey Plaza, whom he had been dating since 2011, as per reports. The couple reportedly got married in 2021. Baena described Aubrey as an "awesome" woman in a statement to Reel Talker in 2022, mentioning that he was lucky to have her as his partner.

Law enforcement officers pronounced the film icon dead at the scene, as per Page Six. However, any further details related to his death have not been revealed yet and has thus led to a lot of social media tumult lately.


Jeff Baena was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment

Per People Magazine, American film director Jeff Baena was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment. The first person to discover his body was one of his assistants.

The incident reportedly took place at around 10:30 am local time on January 3, 2025. As reported by TMZ, Baena was announced dead at the spot by law enforcement officers, and the immediate cause of death was declared as suicide.

However, the investigators have not responded to any further questions. Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Coroner’s Office are currently involved in the case - however, they have not revealed any official details on Jeff's death yet.

Born and raised in Miami, Jeff Baena graduated in film studies from New York University. He later moved to L.A. to work as a writer and film director. Baena worked as a screenwriter with David O. Russell for the 2004 black comedy film I Heart Huckabees starring Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, and Naomi Watts.

Jeff made his directorial debut in the 2014 zombie comedy movie Life After Berth, starring Aubrey Plaza. Some of Jeff's notable projects include The Little Hours (2017), Horse Girl (2020), and Spin Me Around (2022).

As per People Magazine, Jeff and Aubrey tied the knot in 2021, which Plaza posted about on her Instagram. Plaza reportedly mentioned in a statement on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in December 2021 saying,

"We got a little bored one night. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s real, look it up. I created a very quick love altar in our yard. Facts of our love, little stones, smoke, fire. Things of that nature. Then the man from Alhambra showed up. I can’t remember a lot of it, it was fuzzy. But, I’m pretty sure it was legal."
