American playwright, author, and actor Jason Segel originally came into the limelight in the late 1990s when he appeared on "Freaks and Geeks." His most famous part was that of Marshall Eriksen in the 2005–2014 CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother.


His career started with television shows Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000) and Undeclared (2001–2002), where he worked with director and producer Judd Apatow. He subsequently rose to fame for his leading parts in several popular comedy films that he wrote, produced, and starred in.

Growing up in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood with two brothers, Segel was raised in a Jewish household and went to Hebrew school as a young child. Because of his height, Jason Segel was a standout basketball player in high school.


He made his screen debut in the comedy-drama Freaks and Geeks on NBC in which Segel portrayed Nick Andopolis, a stoner in high school. Although the series was well received by critics, it was sadly short-lived. Soon after, he landed more parts in various TV shows. Segel was cast in a recurring role on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.


He made significant progress in 2005 when he was cast in the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Segel played Marshall Eriksen in the series, and the enormous popularity of the show helped gain him much more attention. Segel kept making appearances on the program until its 2014 finale. He made an appearance on Saturday Night Live as well.

Segel's first film performance was in Can't Hardly Wait in 1998. He then went on to become well-known for his roles in Knocked Up, Slackers, and I Love You, Man. His leading part in the romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which he also authored, is one of his most memorable movie appearances. Segel co-created and acted in the television series Dispatches from Elsewhere in 2020. Additionally, it was revealed in 2020 that Segel would play the lead in a Seth Gordon movie that was based on the well-known 2012 maple syrup theft in Quebec.


Furthermore, Segel is a well-known voice actor, providing the voice of Vector, Gru's bitter rival, in the popular film Despicable Me. Also, Segel wrote a Muppets film and co-authored a number of the songs on the Get Him to the Greek script. He is also a well-known writer, having co-authored multiple books with Kirsten Miller.
